SUMMARY

Starting with MySQL 5.7 / MariaDB 10.2 you can specify the password auth plugin when creating a user. If you try to create a user with MySQL 8.0 without specifying the plugin, you get the following error:

"msg": "(1064, \"You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'PASSWORD '********'' at line 1\")",

Specify the password auth plugin for new versions of mysql/mariadb
Starting with MySQL 5.7 / MariaDB 10.2 you can specify the password auth plugin when creating a user, from MySQL 8.0 it will error without.
