To make Redis consistent with most other software, the binaries should be built to a bin directory, not src. Could this be adjusted?

Does this even matter? You're supposed to install the binary - try make install. Also, 'most other software' lacks source.

The install guide says to run the binary from the source directory:

The binaries that are now compiled are available in the src directory. Run Redis with:
$ src/redis-server

I know I can run make install. The point of this issue is to make it clear and consistent.

And for 'most other software' I thought it was obvious I was referring to software with source code.

I guess the install guide can more strongly suggest installing the binary before using it.
I imagine the document author wanting to showcase how to quickly get going.

And for 'most other software' I thought it was obvious I was referring to software with source code.

I was rather referring to where you draw this conclusion from. Most software I use based on auto*,
cmake and other build systems doesn't rearrange built libraries/binaries. Binaries most often lies in src,
and libraries in lib (at least this convention is strongly suggested from autotools).
