Using the latest ModPageSpeed (development) I see various lines in my error
logs along the lines of:

[error] [mod_pagespeed 1.1.23.2-2191 @22613]
/var/www/mod_pagespeed/cache/SxUp9DU0D9VgPHnCARKt.lock/:0: Failed to opendir:
No such file or directory

The cache and ModPageSpeed works fine otherwise and this minor issue has been
appearing in my log files for quite some time.

Maybe it is just another instance of reporting being too verbose?

Thanks for the bug report.

During cache cleanup mod_pagespeed visits each directory (including temporary
locks) that it can find. My best guess is that while doing an 'ls' a resource
lock (represented as a directory with a .lock name) was found but when it tried
to visit the directory a bit later the lock had already disappeared, causing
this error. So it should be harmless, but we should fix it to not print an
error.

Correct, these error messages are harmless. I'll take this task to make sure we
aren't generating these spurious messages in the log.

You'll need to build from source:
  https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/mod_pagespeed/build_from_source
Make sure you check out from trunk:
   gclient config http://modpagespeed.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src

"How do I upgrade to latest trunk?"

Yeah, sorry, silly question (I already knew the answer to that one). What I
really meant was:

Is there a different deb repo other than stable main that offers daily trunk
builds? ...so that I could be using apt-get upgrade to update.

Great! Thanx ;)

...one last question: is there any issue filed for that TODO? If yes please
kindly point to it. Thanx again.
