Visual Railroad

Scrape content from tumblr and display it as a visual walk along its tags.

How it works

  • it scrapes Tumblr for the last posts available for all words from the general service list (you can adapt it to your own taste)
  • using the tags of these posts, it calculate the shortest pathes between all the tags
  • it export the pathes for the 2000 most used tags

How to use it:

  • a PostgreSQL database
  • ruby for the scraping and the resulting website
  • java for the internal calculation
  • some disk space: ~4GB for the internal calculation binary files (can be deleted), and 300MB for the database with 2000 tags

  • install ruby sequel gem

  • in /script run the migrations "sequel -m migrations postgres://user@host/databasename" (adapt to your own database configuration)
  • edit the database connexion url in /scripts/common
  • in /script run 01_general_scrappe.rb
  • in /script run 02_most_used_tags.rb
  • edit the connexion url in /scripts/src/
  • compile and run /scripts/src/ with the PostgreSQL JDBC connector in the classpath, it may take a few minutes
  • (optional) delete the /scripts/data.bin file
  • edit the database connexion url in /site/
  • start the website

You can modify

  • the starting words in /scripts/words.txt
  • the words excluded from the final list in /scripts/stopwords.txt
  • the number of tags to use in the result in /scripts/03_most_used_tags.rb
