Is it possible to use letters for callouts instead of numbers? Example:

Very interesting idea!

I think the best approach here would be to allow the start glyph to be specified. The remaining glyphs would then increment from there.

This is similar to the following setting in the DocBook toolchain:

http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/doc/fo/callout.unicode.start.character.html

We need to decide what the attribute name should be to configure this. Perhaps something like:

:callout-start-char: a

Let me know if you have a better idea for the attribute name. Once we decide on the name, I can move forward with implementation.

BTW, it's a strong desire of a publisher to use letters instead of numbers, there is a whole document describing why it's better 😃.

I was thinking about an attribute to set the type of callouts, but your proposal is more flexible. It doesn't only allow to specify a type, but also let's you set an initial value. The name is nicely aligned with DocBook's version, I think it will be easier to find it for people who have experience with DocBook.
