| <p ALIGN="JUSTIFY"></font><font size="2">When an Alabama police officer could not find any | |
| organization to teach about the special problems of school-based violence and crime, he | |
| approached Law Advisory. I was only too happy to have our research staff take a look at | |
| the area of law. </p> | |
| <p ALIGN="JUSTIFY">I discovered some disturbing facts. </p> | |
| <p ALIGN="JUSTIFY">Many school officials refused to cooperate with police, even in | |
| dangerous situations, because they had been told that it would be illegal. Vice principals | |
| believed this. So did principals. So did Superintendents and even some school attorneys.</font></p> | |
| <font size="2"> | |
| <p ALIGN="JUSTIFY">Even more frightening, some prosecutors were telling police to let | |
| school officials do such potentially deadly searches as frisks for weapons <i>because the | |
| case would be easier to win if the educator acted alone.</i> Clearly somebody had to do | |
| something to aid the course of police-school relations.</p> | |
