CALVIN GUTKIN QUALITY AWARD</font></p>
<p>The Dr. Calvin Gutkin Award was established in 1995 to recognize outstanding
achievement by a team or individual who has made a significant improvement in the
care/service provided to our customers.</p>
<p>This year, there were seven nominations for the 1998 Dr. Calvin Gutkin Quality Award.
The projects were evaluated by a multidisciplinary selection committee using Quality
Improvement Principles such as Team work, Customer Focus, Process Orientation, Measurement
Data, Prevention Based Strategies, etc.</p>
<p>Congratulations to all of the nominees:</p>
<i><p>1. Mabel Lee, Hospitality Team Leader, Neela Chhabra, Resource Centre Technologist,
Ray Gauthier, Team Leader, Food Production, Anne-Marie Graham, Nurse Manager for their
project Decentralization of Late Trays.</p>
</i><p>Outcomes include: reduced patient waiting times from 2 hours to 25 minutes with
increased patient satisfaction and improved communication link regarding food trays
between PSR, patients and Nursing Team.</p>
<i><p>2. Colleen Ryan, Occupational Therapist and Cindy Van Horn, Nurse Educator and the
Rehabilitation Unit Multidisciplinary Team </i>for their Project on the Development of
Rehabilitation Standards. This project resulted in the development of amethodology for
assessing rehabilitation services to ensure that resources are maximally allocated for
patient benefit in terms of measurable outcomes.<i></p>
<p>3. Dr. Sauls, Family Physician and Dr. S. Harrop, Family Physician </i>who designed and
carried out a study to determine the type and acuity of ER patients who were admitted to
Family Doctors as the MRP. The analysis of the patient types and acuity led tothe
development of admission guidelines which helps to ensure that the physician with the most
appropriate skills orspeciality is responsible for the patient's care.</p>
<i><p>4. Dennis Cazzin, Pharmacist, The Cornfield Pharmacy</i> for his special attention
to helping HIV patients with their antiretroviral medications. His knowledge and
compassion has led to a very high medication compliance rate.</p>
<i><p>5. Dr. Sauls, Family Physician</i> for his dedication to the Palliative Care Program
and improved care and service within the last 12 months. For his integrity and compassion,
and for &quot;being the engine that makes the Palliative Care Programme go.&quot;</p>
<i><p>6. Debbie Berube, Sharon Carr, Barb Chapman, Sue Hogarth, Lactation Consultants </i>for
providing ongoing support to our childbearing families and for acting as mentors and
leaders to the staff. Because of their support to both patients and staff, our
breastfeeding rates continue to remain high which has a positive impact on the immediate
and future health of our community.<i></p>
<p>7. The Multidisciplinary Skin Care Team, Beverly Douglas, Nursing Director, Sylvie
Pirro, Nurse Educator, Dr. C. Kalbfleisch, Dermatologist, Anne-Marie Graham, Nurse
Manager, Eric White, Nurse Manager, Shelley DeHay-Turner, Nurse Manager, Patricia O'Brien,
Nurse Manager, Barb Guidolin, Nurse Manager, Elva Waldron, Nurse Manager, Debbie Cooper,
Nurse Manager, Marilue Lefebvre, Dietitian, Cheryl Allen, Staff Nurse, Sandy Takeda, Staff
Nurse, Peggy Hobbs, Staff Nurse, Sharon Ho, Pharmacist, Infection Control Practitioner. </i></p>
<p>This team was instrumental in developing, implementing and evaluating both a
comprehensive Hospitalwide Skin Care Program and the Peel Regional Skin Wound Management
Program both of which have demonstrated excellent clinical, cost and service outcomes.</p>
<p><strong><font size="3">Congratulations to The Multidisciplinary Skin Care Team who are
1998's Recipients of the Dr. Calvin Gutkin Quality Award.</font></strong></p>
