COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">STRAWBERRIES</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - Grown throughout New York for local sales and U-Pick. The State ranked 7th in production in 1998 and the crop was valued at $7.01 million.<BR><BR> </FONT><A NAME="2"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">DRY BEANS</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - Grown in Western New York and valued at $10.8 million in 1998. New York ranks 10th in production.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="3"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">GRAIN</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - New York also has significant production of several grain crops. Corn, oats and wheat are the mostly widely grown in the State. New York ranks 3rd in corn silage production and 17th in corn for grain. The State placed 8th in oat production and 29th in winter wheat.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="4"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">HAY</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - Production was valued at $279 million in 1998. New York ranks 20th in all hay and 12th in production of clover and grass hay. Most of the hay is used on the farms where produced and the value realized through the sale of milk and livestock.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="5"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">MAPLE SYRUP</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - A $5.01 million crop in 1998 ranked the State 2nd in production after neighboring Vermont. New York's 1999 output was lowered due to weather conditions and producers who were hurt by last years ice storm.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="6"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">TART CHERRIES</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - Produced mostly in the Lake Ontario region of Western New York. Production and value of the crop fluctuates widely. New York ranked 4th nationally in 1998 production. The 1998 crop was valued at $2.20 million.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="7"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">DAIRY PRODUCTS</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - Milk is New York's leading agricultural product and is produced throughout the State. Milk accounts for over one-half of the State's farm cash receipts from all products. Production in 1998 was 11.7 billion pounds with a total value of $1.8 billion. New York ranks 3rd nationally in milk production.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="8"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">HORTICULTURE</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - In New York, greenhouse and nursery products value of production was $264 million in 1998. Production is concentrated on Long Island and elsewhere close to heavily populated areas. These products are grown on approximately 50,000 acres and over 25 million square feet of glass or other protected covered area. The 1998 Census of Horticultural Specialties showed New York wholesale value of sales at over $159 million. This placed the Empire State sixth in the combined value of flowers and bedding plants, behind California, Florida, Michigan, Texas, and Ohio.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="9"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">MEAT PRODUCTION</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - New York with 200,500 calves slaughtered during 1998 dropped to 2nd place. There also were 86,600 cattle, 52,700 hogs and 30,000 sheep and lambs slaughtered in New York plants in 1998. The value of meat animals sold by New York farmers was $119 million in 1998.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="10"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">APPLES</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - New York ranked 2nd in the nation in apple production in 1998 behind Washington. The crop is valued at about $110 million. Three general areas produce the apple crop: along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, the Hudson Valley counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster, and Orange, and the Lake Champlain Valley, mostly in Clinton County. Leading varieties produced include McIntosh, Rome, Empire, Red Delicious, Rhode Island Greening, Idared, Cortland and Empire.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="11"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">POTATOES</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - Production is centered in eastern Suffolk County (Long Island) and Upstate in Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming, and Livingston Counties, with scattered production in other areas of the State. Value in 1998 was $68.9 million. The State ranks 10th in production.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="12"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">EGGS</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - An important segment of the State's agriculture, with 1998 production valued at $50.9 million. Production is spread throughout the State. Leading counties include Wayne, Erie, and Cayuga in the west and Sullivan in the southeast. New York ranked 21st in egg production in 1998.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="13"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">ONIONS </FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1">- An important crop, valued at $51.6 million in 1998. Onions are primarily grown in muck soils in Orange, Orleans, Oswego, Madison, and Wayne Counties. The State ranked 6th in production in 1998, with 375 million pounds.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="14"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">GRAPES</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - New York ranked 3rd in the production of grapes in 1998, behind California and Washington. The crop was valued at $38.1 million with most used for juice and wine. New York is third only to California and Washington in wine production. There are four major grape producing regions in the state - The Lake Erie area, the Finger Lakes area, the Hudson Valley area and on Long Island. Each region had unique grape growing conditions, but what they all have in common are bodies of water which moderate the temperature year round. Concord is the dominant variety produced in the State and normally accounts for about 73 percent of the total<BR> production.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="15"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">CABBAGE</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - Principally grown south of Lake Ontario in Monroe, Genesee, Orleans, Ontario and Niagara Counties. This is the center of production of cabbage for storage, which is moved to the fresh market during the winter months. Cabbage is also grown in Suffolk County. Value of the crop grown in 1998 was about $52.8 million. New York ranked second in fresh market and second in cabbage for kraut in 1998.</FONT></P> <P><A NAME="16"></A><B><FONT COLOR="#006600" SIZE="-1">SWEET CORN</FONT></B><FONT SIZE="-1"> - Produced throughout the State with concentration in the Lower Hudson Valley and in Western and Central New York in Genesee, Cayuga, Ontario, Orleans, Livingston, Monroe, Wyoming, and Wayne Counties. The 1998 value of the crop was $30.2 million. Lettuce and celery are grown in the muck soils of Orange and Oswego Counties.
