<font color = "#C00000"Size 5>COLLEGE RECRUITING and THE AAU BASKETBALL PROGRAM REVIEW

In Following our column started last week, we have two additional athletes to be added to our list of student- athletes that are moving from high school to higher education by using sports as the tool to help pay for their education. This week the Maine Hoops Club, Mr. Tom Nolette, provides our list.

Chris Markwood, 6’4”, South Portland, Maine – Chris will be heading to Notre Dame on a full basketball scholarship (Division I school)

Ben Smith, 6’4”, Boothbay, Maine – Ben will be attending St. Michaels, Vermont, on a full basketball scholorship (Division II school)

These two athletes help to speak the message that AAU and President Bobby Dodd have been preaching to anyone that would listen. He has addressed the National Federation of High Schools, the NCAA, and other organizations to attempt to defuse the argument from those parties that AAU coaches and other programs are money grabbing, headhunting, coattail riding agents that destroy young people by driving them hard during the summer. In reality, it is because of the good, well meaning individuals that give of their time and effort, for the athletes to participate in the off season, that athletes such as Ben Smith get a chance to get an college education by playing ball at a less than recognized school versus the Dukes, UNC’s, U.of Kentuckys, and other well known Division I schools.

Coach Bruce Howard who participates in the AAU program coaching the 15:U AAU All-Ohio Red. He defends playing summer basketball because it helps athletes get full rides when they may otherwise slipped through the cracks.

“Don’t penalize the kids or the mid-major schools like the Daytons and the Xaviers and the Division II’s” Howard states. “The top schools are always going to get theirs, but what about the other kids?”

Recently, there was an article that was picked up by the Associated Press and other news media that referenced a situation where a coach, in the Chicago, Illinois area was disciplined by the AAU Boys’ Basketball Committee for allowing a young lady to play in an AAU tournament for boys. Many people thought the AAU was discriminating against young athletes but the AAU did nothing more than exercise its policies. The AAU has a program for female basketball players; in fact the AAU Girls’ Basketball program is the largest in the AAU’s stable of 32 sports.

If we stop and look at the AAU program, in overall prospective, we would realize that the AAU, through its 32 sport programs, carries the AAU slogan of Sports For All, Forever!, to the letter. The AAU sports programs are not just for super stars, as with some camps and apparel programs, but for the athletes. Athletes are given the same consideration when a college or university coach has the ability to attend a summer AAU tournament and see 1,000 or more athletes versus trying to visit a high school in between his own schedule or attending an elite event sponsored by a camp promoter. Many times the camp is held on a college or university campus. How convenient for that coach who is trying to recruit the best athletes.

One of these days, the ‘ownership theory’ will leave us and the true meaning of “we are doing it for the kids” will come forth. Whether an athlete goes to a Division I school, Division II, Division III, NAIA, Junior College, Community College, or Technical School, lets encourage them to JUST GO. If by playing basketball or any sport can help them get an education, then we should encourage it. It sure does help the parent’s pocketbook.

<font color = "#C00000"Size 5>NCAA WOMEN SHOWCASE TALENT AT DISNEY'S WWS

Sunday, December 5, 1999, the Walt Disney World Sports Complex was full of basketball talent that resembled and all star showcase. Involved in the single day affair were for of the top 10 teams in the NCAA rankings. The U. of Conn., number one in the country played Penn State, number 11. In the second game UCLA, number five, played Louisiana Tech, number four.

Although both games were less than close, UCONN and LA TECH showed the viewing audience that they more than likely will be at the final four contested in March of 2000. All four teams showcased young ladies that had participated in the AAU during their earlier years. The playmaker, passer, rebounder, and shooter, when needed for Conn., Shea Ralph, started in AAU Basketball events at the age of nine. She credits her AAU play for her ability to face the tough competition she faces now. From LA Tech, Tamicha Jackson, 5’5” Sr. from Dallas Texas, was seen on the court, but as a blur. She is an all-round good player, fast, a good shooter, rebounder,, and leader on the court. Penn State has a young ball team, but many of their athletes are adjusting in fine fashion due to their AAU experiences.

The AAU would like to thank INTERSPORT, and particularly Jacqui Weber, as the Florida AAU under the guidance of Mar Rodriguez worked with Ms. Weber and distributed over 1,000 tickets to Florida AAU athletes and their families. Plans are already underway for the event next year.

"For young amateur athletes, the joy is in the participation, the agony of defeat is in the mind of the parent."

While this is certainly not true of every parent, it does offer the opportunity for the year 2000 and beyond to work on "SPORTSMANSHIP FOR ALL, FOREVER!, along with "SPORTS FOR ALL, FOREVER!

<font color = "#C00000"Size 5>NAME CHANGE OF AAU PARTNER

Effective December 13, 1999, the name of the AAU marketing partner, Intergrated Sports International (ISI) will be changed to reflect their recent merger into SFX Enterprises. The new corporation will be known as SFX Enterprises. We look forward to a great opportunity for expansion of sponsorships as SFX Enterprises is now one of the largest marketing firms in the world involving sports and entertainment.

<font color = "#C00000"Size 5>AN IMPORTANT CHANGE IN AAU POLICY RESULTING FROM AAU CONVENTION 09/25/99

Important AAU Code Change:
The AAU National Board of Directors amended the AAU Code as follows:
302.3 Representation. An athlete may elect to participate in his Association of bona fide residence or an Association which geographically adjoins that Association. EXCEPTION: In team sports, a maximum of three (3) athletes may participate with a team from an adjoining Association(s). Team sports include baseball, basketball (boys and girls), field hockey, flag football, hockey (ice and inline), soccer, softball, and volleyball.

This means:

1. An athlete must register in the Association where s/he resides.

2. An athlete has the choice to participate in his/her AAU Association of residence or in an AAU Association that adjoins his/her Association. Permission from the Registration Chair, Sports Chair, etc., is not required to play in an adjoining Association.

3. In a team sport, a maximum of 3 players from outside the Association conducting the competition may be on the roster. For example, in a Southeastern AAU event, a team could have 1 player who is a resident and registered with the Arkansas Association; 1 player who is a resident and registered with the Southern Association; and 1 player who is a resident and registered with the Georgia Association (not 3 from each Association).

<font color = "#C00000"Size 5>Getting MADD......

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has administered a “call to action” plan for the youth of America. Recently, they changed their mission statement to incorporate the prevention of underage drinking. The new statement reads as follows: “The mission of MADD is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking.”

MADD would like the assistance of the AAU Family in making this “call” a reality. MADD is asking organizations like the AAU to step up and speak to the young people about the dangers of both underage drinking and drinking and driving.

With the holidays full of parties just around the corner, the message of PLAY IT SAFE – “Don’t Drink and DRIVE” needs to be driven home. If you would like more information about MADD, please visit <A HREF:"http://www.madd.org">www.madd.org.

Pro Players Learned Early at AAU Level

December 11, 1999 the Orlando Magic and the Chicago Bulls squared off in the O’RENA in Orlando. One significant match up was two former college teammates, Corey Maggette (Orlando) and Elton Brand (Chicago). Both players left Duke University prior to graduation and were meeting for the first time in professional uniforms. Both players performed admirably and broke even in the statistics column. Both of these athletes, along with Ron Artest, former St. John’s University standout, played on teams that participated in the AAU during their high school years. Artest and Brand played on the team.

The AAU, along with the assistance and the guidance of the Joel Ferrell family, established the Joel Ferrell Memorial Award to recognize the athletic ability and sportsmanship of an athlete representing each official sport at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. In addition to the award presented at the Games, each recipient's name is engraved on a special plaque at the AAU National Headquarters.

Joel Ferrell, a former aerospace engineer, made numerous contributions to the AAU. Well known in the swimming community, he was inducted to The Swimming Hall of Fame and has a pool in Tullahoma, Tennessee named after him. He held several positions with the AAU, including the presidency from 1976-78, and was Vice President of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). In December 1988, he passed away in his hometown of Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Recently, Karen Ferrell, daughter of the late Mr. Ferrell, contacted the AAU National Office about communicating with past AAU Joel Ferrell Award winners. The award has great meaning to her and her family and they would like to know what our past winners are doing these days. If you would like to communicate with Karen Ferrell, please e-mail her at TNFITKF1084@aol.com.

Dear Paul:

As a coach for the Savannah Silver Cheetahs Track & Field Club, the Games are a thrill for me. I ran AAU back in the 70's for Ambler Olympic Club, and Larry Wilson (chair for AAU X-C) was my coach throughout my entire youth. Now, I coach an AAU member club and every Games (either cross country or track/field) I get to see all those teams & coaches who are still around. Amazingly, I have bumped into old team mates and runners who I used to compete against. This is truly the long lived spirit of AAU. I cannot express how wonderful it is to see many years later those former AAU runners and talk about "those days" and who is doing what these days. It's also such a joy to see Mr. Wilson at least twice a year at Nationals. Coaches cannot know the impact they have on a young person's life until years later. Thanks AAU for all the fond memories (all of which are captured in my scrapbook, still have every race number ever worn, photos, AAU certificates, ribbons, you name it...I still have it). Thanks AAU for keeping quality people who encourage youth to excel. Thanks AAU for being a huge part of my life and I feel committed to give through coaching an AAU member club.

Sincerely,
Maggie Keenan
