As a journal of public policy, New Jersey Reporter seeks to provide top-notch investigative reporting, in-depth analysis, thoughtful commentary and alternative solutions to the critical public policy issues facing New Jersey.

The magazine started as a newsletter in 1975, became New Jersey Magazine the following year, was renamed New Jersey Reporter in 1979, and has been published continuously ever since. This record led the New York Times to characterize the magazine's role as the "institutional memory" of New Jersey public policy.

New Jersey Reporter publishes 11 issues a year, with a combined August-September issue.

Mark J. Magyar, a veteran Statehouse reporter and daily newspaper editor, serves as Editor of New Jersey Reporter. Magyar covered the Florio administration for the Asbury Park Press, Governor Kean's second term for The Record of Hackensack, and the end of the Byrne administration for the now-defunct Daily Register of Shrewsbury. He served in the Whitman administration as deputy chief of policy and planning, as director of "reinventing government" initiatives, and as a policy adviser on labor and personnel issues.

Richard E. Hartten, a journalist for 34 years, serves as New Jersey Reporter's Managing Editor. An award-winning journalist, he was the longtime editor of the Hunterdon Review.

New Jersey Reporter's stable of rotating columnists includes former Gov. Jim Florio, former Congressman Dick Zimmer, longtime Statehouse reporter Jim Goodman, Republican consultant Carl Golden, Rutgers-Camden Professor Gloria Bonilla-Santiago, former state Sen. Gordon MacInnes, civic activist Dale Caldwell and lawyer Peter Buchsbaum.
