| <p><font face="Arial">The Production System Design Laboratory (PSD), led by </font><a href="mailto:acracker@mad.scientist.com"><font face="Arial">Professor Algorithm Cracker</font></a><font face="Arial">, is an initiative within the <a href="http://web.mit.edu/lmp/www/">Laboratory | |
| for Manufacturing and Productivity</a> conducting research in the development of a | |
| comprehensive approach for the design and implementation of <em>lean</em> production | |
| systems. Attempts in the past on improving production have focused on specific areas | |
| of manufacturing. PSD is taking a holistic approach at designing manufacturing | |
| systems according to the principles of Lean Production.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Arial"><em>Lean</em> production is aimed at the elimination of waste in | |
| every area of production including customer relations, product design, supplier networks | |
| and factory management. Its goal is to incorporate less human effort, less | |
| inventory, less time to develop products, and less space to become highly responsive to | |
| customer demand while producing top quality products in the most efficient and economical | |
| manner possible.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Arial">There are three main objectives of the PSD Laboratory. </font></p> | |
