| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">Norman Sterling was elected to the Ontario | |
| Legislature for the seventh time on June 3, 1999. and appointed by the Premier as Minister | |
| of Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Government House Leader. He has | |
| been Minister of the Environment and Government House Leader since October 1997, | |
| and a member of the Policies and Priorities Committee of Cabinet since August | |
| 1996.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">Previously, he served as Minister of Consumer | |
| and Commercial Relations from June 1995 to August 1996, and as Minister of the | |
| Environment and Energy from August 1996 to October 1997. He was Deputy House | |
| Leader from June 1995 to October 1997.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">As the longest-sitting Member of the P.C. Caucus, Mr. Sterling has | |
| held a wide range of responsibilities during his time in office. In his first term, he | |
| served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Attorney General, and in 1981, was appointed | |
| Minister without Portfolio. From 1982 to 1985 Mr. Sterling served as Justice Minister and | |
| Resources Development Minister. He has also served as P.C. Deputy House Leader, Chair of | |
| P.C. Caucus, and P.C. critic for various ministries including Intergovernmental Affairs, | |
| Treasury and Economic, Industry, Trade and Technology, and Consumer and Commercial | |
| Relations.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">Among his many accomplishments during his years as MPP include:</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">A major role in the creation of the City of Kanata</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">A constant advocate for the completion of Highway 416 | |
| and 417</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">The Minister who brought forward the first Freedom of Information | |
| and Privacy Act</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">The MPP who was most responsible for bringing forward laws to | |
| control smoking the workplace.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">The MPP who first introduced laws for enduring power of attorneys | |
| and living wills</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">The Minister responsible for the Niagara Escarpment Plan</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">The Minister responsible for implementing one of the most | |
| comprehensive vehicle emissions testing programs in North America- Drive Clean.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">Mr. Sterling earned a Bachelor of Engineering (civil) from Carleton | |
| University in 1964 and obtained Status of Professional Engineer in 1966. He received a law | |
| degree from the University of Ottawa in 1969 and was called to the Bar in 1971. He was | |
| named Queen's Counsel in 1981.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">Prior to entering politics, Mr. Sterling had worked at Du Pont of | |
| Canada as an engineer, and owned and operated a small manufacturing firm. He then | |
| practiced law for the six years preceding his election.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">In his spare time, he enjoys golf, tennis, downhill skiing and | |
| hockey.</font></p> | |
| <p><font face="Tahoma" size="3">Mr. Sterling and his spouse Joan are the Parents of four adult | |
| children.</font></p> | |
