| <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">The objective of Special Education courses is to provide each student the most appropriate educational program based on his/her individual needs. The high school provides small group and individual instruction to permit each student to develop the skills necessary at his/her appropriate educational level. Students are placed in their least restrictive setting and challenged to their optimal learning potential.</P> | |

| <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">The high school Special Education program is departmental. All academic courses required by the State Education Department Curriculum and teaching strategies are modified to best meet the needs of our students while still meeting SED requirements. Students may work toward a Regents diploma, a local diploma or an IEP diploma.</P> | |

| <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">The courses offered within this department parallel the regular course offerings of the high school. The current course offerings are:</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">ENGLISH 9, 10, 11</U> These courses are designed for the improvement of reading and writing skills. </P> | |
| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">ENGLISH 12</U> This course is designed to enhance skills learned in the previous English classes. Its purpose is to help the students become independent, literate members of our society.</P> | |
| <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"> </P> | |
| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">MATH 9</U> This course is designed to prepare students in the fundamental basics of general Math.</P> | |
| <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY"> </P> | |
| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">MATH 10, 11, 12</U> These courses stress personal consumer math and business math principles. The goal of the courses is to prepare students for life skills.</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">GLOBAL STUDIES 9, 10</U> These courses parallel those in the Social Studies department preparing the students with a basic historical and cultural knowledge of the prescribed curriculum by SED.</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">AMERICAN HISTORY 11</U> This course parallels the American History curriculum set forth by the SED.</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">GOVERNMENT AND ECONOMICS 12</U> This course focuses on our system of economics and government. This is a state required course.</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">SCIENCE 9</U> This course provides a review of basic science concepts and process skills in general Science.</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">BIOLOGY 10</U> This is a basic biology course paralleling the New York State syllabus.</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">HEALTH AND FAMILY LIFE</U> This course is designed to educate the students about health-related topics as outlined in the New York State requirements.</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">UNIFIED SCIENCE 12</U> This is an elective course designed for our students who seek a three-year sequence in science. The course is a survey approach in the four basic science areas, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and how they apply to everyday life and technology.</P> | |

| <U><P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">VOCATIONAL CLASS</U> This class deals with the process of a secondary student assessing his strengths and interests in terms of vocational planning. In addition there will be guest speakers and field trips when applicable.</P> | |
