developed with the hope that its contents will help protect the homes and families that
constitute the population of people that make up our fine state. If this checklist saves
just <b>one life from fire death, </b>our goal will have been fulfilled.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Fire Prevention in the home begins with a constant
and continuing awareness of potential fire dangers. This awareness must be apart of each
family member's continuing daily thought process. </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">We the people of Arkansas live in a state that has
been recognized statistically as having the 2nd to 5th highest fire death state in the
USA.</font></strong></p>
<b>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">IT IS TIME TO CHANGE THAT. THE CHANGE BEGINS WITH
YOU AND STARTS RIGHT IN THE HOME YOU LIVE IN with the educating of your family.</font></strong></b></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">The following check list is offered to you <u><b>FREE</b></u>
of charge from the Arkansas Fire Academy with the hopes that you and your loved ones will
live a fire safe life, forever and always.</font></strong></p>

<p ALIGN="CENTER"><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">THE THREE KEYS TO FIRE SAFETY</font></strong></b></p>
<ul>
<li><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">1. The Absolute key to fire safety lies in the word <u><b>prevention.</b>
</font></strong></li>
</ul>
<ul>
</u>
<li><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">2. <b>Prevention</b> is<u> </u>a continuous process
that need be applied in all activity / action that the potential for fire injury may
occur.</font></strong></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">3. <b>Prevention </b>thoughts or application must be
a daily reality that we must all be able to recall on our education to prevent fires and
safeguard whenever the need appears.</font></strong></li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">HOME SAFETY CHECK LIST</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">A. Install Smoke alarms _______. Install on every
level of house, keeping in mind every family member must be able to hear the alarm. If you
sleep with your bedroom door closed, consider installing one inside your bedroom. A good
rule of thumb to remember is a smoke alarm will not help, if you can't hear it. So place
as many in your home as necessary to sound the alarm for all to hear. </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Note: The use of smoke alarms in your home is an
absolute requirement for a fire safe home. This simple device will protect you when you
are most vulnerable to fire and injury (when you are asleep) or it will warn you of fire
danger in an area of the house that you couldn't have recognized without the sounding of
its alarm.</font></strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">B. Check your smoke alarm, at minimum yearly
_______. (The Arkansas Fire Academy recommends four checks yearly). </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Note: Check your smoke alarms at least once a year,
make the testing of your smoke alarm a reality that associates its test with an event that
you can't forget. </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Example: TEST IT on your Birthday. </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Note: Never take batteries out of a smoke alarm for
any reason, if it is disturbing your cooking LET IT.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">NOTE:<i> The Arkansas Fire Academy recommends you
check the alarms four times yearly and do it with the help of your children. Make it fun
and make it a learning experience. </i></font></strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">C. Prepare a family escape plan and practice it as
often as it takes to educate</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">every member of your household ________.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">-The escape plan or evacuation plan will allow your
family to react to a fire situation with swift and confident movement. A well rehearsed
plan will help eliminate much of the confusion that is associated with a fire situation.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">- <b>Always plan and practice two routes from each
room. If one route leads to a window, always insure you have a safe way to get to the
ground surface.</b></font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Kitchen Safety</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Fire dangers associated with the kitchen are
greater than any other room in your home. Things like open burners / open flames add
significantly to out break of fire). </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">D. Insure the stove, range hood and oven are kept
clean and free of grease. _______</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">F. Insure an all-purpose ABC type fire extinguisher
is in a readily assessable location for kitchen use. _______</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">- Insure the proper use of microwave ovens, never
place an item inside unless you are sure it is in compliant with manufacturer's
instructions. </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">- Insure fire extinguisher checks are performed
semi-annually. The needle in gauge is normally positioned in the center of the green,
indicating a fully charged extinguisher. Note: Always read the operating instructions on
your particular extinguisher to insure not only proper use, and as well, proper checking
of the device.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Home Heating</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">G. <b>Home heating systems should </b>be checked by
a licensed professional. We recommend just prior to the beginning of the heating season.
________</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">H. <b>Water Heaters - </b>should also be checked
annually by a licensed professional. _______</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Note: Many city utility companies will provide this
service FREE of charge upon request.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">I. <b>Space heaters -</b> ALWAYS keep the heat
source / heat element a minimum of 3 (three) feet or one yard away from any combustible
item. Remember also children are often unaware of the dangers associated with this type of
heater. Instruct them. ______ </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">- Always read the safe operating instructions prior
to putting to use any space heater, gas or electric. Think Safety, Think Fire Safety! </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">J. Utility Rooms, Clean dryer lint vent after each
use. Make this a practiced HABIT. _______</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">K. Never store or lay combustibles near the water
heater. Water heaters are often found in utility rooms. Remember a laundry basket set
close to a water heater is a combustible. Apply the three-foot rule (no combustible
material within 3 ft of the water heater).</font></strong></p>

<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Accidental fires in the home do result from
careless smoking habits even today in 1999. </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">-Remember: <u>NEVER</u> </b>smoke in bed (this is
still the prominent cause of fire deaths and injuries to smokers).</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">- Use only deep dish ashtrays and always thoroughly
put the cigarette out upon completion of its use.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">L. Combustibles: <u>NEVER</u> store combustible
items in the house or fixed extensions of the house. Example: in garages. ______.</font></strong></p>

<p><u><font face="Arial" size="5"><strong><b>Fire Safety Tips</b></strong></font></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">FOR CHILDREN</font></strong></u></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Teach your children fire safety. (Start at the
preschool age)</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Teach them to stop drop and roll. (Should fire get
on their clothing)</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Remember most fires started by children are started
by children of preschool age.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Keep matches out of children's reach.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">The Arkansas Fire Academy has a children's fire
safety house / instructional center. It can be made available to your child's school.
Speak to us or discus the use of it with your children's school. We will be glad to help.
The state of Arkansas has FIVE such children's fire safety houses. Call the Arkansas
Children's Hospital for the location of the one nearest you. </font></strong></p>
<p><u>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">FOR THE KITCHEN</font></strong></u></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Never leave cooking unattended.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Turn pot handles in (so as not to bump them
accidentally in passing).</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Do not cook while wearing garments that are loose
fitting or have loose fitting sleeves.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Never overload electrical outlets (kitchens and
utility rooms are common places for this danger).</font></strong></p>
<p><u>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">FIREPLACE</font></strong></u></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Burn only prescribed fuel sources.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Always keep a fire screen in place (anytime the
fireplace is in use).</font></strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><b><font face="Arial" size="5"><strong>IN CASE OF FIRE:</strong></font></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">&quot;When smoke alarms sound &quot;</font></strong></b></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">If you are in bed, do not sit straight up.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Roll off the bed, always keeping in mind that smoke
and heat rise. Remember you can't breath unless you are below the heat and smoke layer.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Crawl under the smoke to exit the house (<b>use
your <u>fire escape plan</u></b>).</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Check each door for heat before opening it. Use the
back of your hand. If the door is hot, use an alternate exit route.</font></strong></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="4"><strong>Once your family is out of the house <b><u>DO NOT
GO BACK INSIDE</u> for any reason.</b></strong></font>
<ul>
<li><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Call the fire department or 911 from a neighbor's
house. Do not attempt to make the call from your burning house.</font></strong></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">If your are trapped: close the door behind you,
stuff the cracks around the door with clothing or sheets. Wait by a window and signal for
help, if you can not exit through the window. Note: Window escape ladders can help provide
a safe way out in such situations. </font></strong></li>
</ul>
<u><b>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Remember delay can be deadly.</b></u> For this
reason you must have a <b>fire escape plan </b>and be prepared to use it immediately. If
you have a two-story residents, window fire escape ladders should be available in every
bedroom upstairs.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Make sure all family members can unlock doors and
open all windows for escape during escape drills.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Get out FAST! </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Find a meeting place for all to gather. </font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Remember to use only cool water on burns. Keep
water on the burn for approximately 15 minutes. If blisters appear seek medical help
immediately.</font></strong></p>
<p><strong><font face="Arial" size="4">Do not go back into the house for any reason.</font></strong></p>
