Thief II In The Works
-
The original Thief by Eidos was a smash, a 3rd person where one had to be stealthy as opposed to killing all the bad guys. The hiding in shadows, weapons and storyline made thief stand out from other 3rd person games. The sequel will allow multiple Thieves to work together in the missions and will be in 16 bit textures ( the original was 8 bit ). Until then The Avault has released the alpha demo which you can get by clicking here.

Two Dollars!
-
Do you remember that great arcade game from the eighties called paperboy? The game was eventually ported over to the commodore64 and many other platforms. In the game you try to keep your subscribers by delivering papers in the middle of chaos. You have to avoid cars, potholes, dogs, avoid breaking widows, and so on. This is a classic game is is being redone for the Nintendo 64. I wish it was coming out for the PC. Here are a few of my all-time favorite classics...

M.U.L.E. - You play as an alien businessman trying to outdo three other players, huge pixels, and huge fun.

Pirates - Swashbuckeling at its best. This was one of the best games ever.

Elite - Space advanturing and trading on the black market, ah, those were the days.

Bards Tale - Great RPG fun. This was a huge game, I went through tons of cola and graph paper.

Monkey Island - Another great pirate type game, this one was a side advanture from Lucas Arts. Great game, one of the best ever.
Long live the classics!

New Mouse Reviews
-
There are two new badass mice on the market: The Razer Boomslang ($99.99 and $69.99) and Micosoft's Intellimouse Explorer ($74.99). Both boast higher resolutions (2000dpi or 1000dpi for the Boomslang and 1500dpi for the Intellimouse), new technology (sophisticated circuitry including a blazing 6 MIPS {millions of instructions per second} - which is 4 times faster than regular mice - that allows it's ultra-high sensitivity in the Razer and a ball-less design which uses an "optical eye" to take photographs of the surface below it and compare it to the previous photograph to enable cursor movement for the Intellimouse) and some user-defined customization for remapping buttons. Here's my take on both products:

I pre-ordered my Boomslang 2000 back in September and was salivating until it showed up at my door. In fact, I actually bought an Intellimouse to hold me over until my Razer got here - mainly because the left mouse button on my old mouse was crapping out. I used the Intellimouse Explorer for 9 days and while I liked it allright, the size of the thing was a little odd, the mouse buttons had a definite cheap feel to them, had weak returns and they still haven't gotten that "Oops, I just pressed the middle mouse button when all I was trying to do was roll the wheel forward." thing fixed that has plagued the Msoft Intellimice since day one. Couple those problems with the very limited remapping options for the buttons and the fact that you have to shift your hand forward to get that forward thumb button (I happen to think that a top/bottom placement would have worked better than the current forward/back arrangement, but that's just me...) and it was an easy choice to return it.

The Razer has on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment (which is really handy), 2000dpi accuracy (at least in my version - there's a 1000dpi model as well), big honking rubberized forward left/right mouse buttons, a 45dpr wheel that has every detente distinctly obvious (it's actually quite stiff and precise - with an audible "click" for each movement of the wheel), the thumb button hits perfectly where your thumb naturally rests and overall tight, responsive action. Plus you can map the extra buttons to any combination of keystrokes up to 16 characters long. If you don't have USB on yer machine (which is pretty rare these days) it has a utility built in for changing the refresh rate up to 200hz. Not to mention the fact that this mouse works for either righties or lefties because it's perfectly symmetrical.

All the goodies aside, the Boomslang performs like a champ. I have noticed increases in accuracy in several games: Rogue Spear, UT, Q3 and, the most obvious, Tribes. Those of you familiar with the game know that it's pretty rare and lucky for you to pop somebody out of the air with the disc launcher or the plasma gun. I've done it on occasion but hardly ever twice or more in a session. The second nite I had my Razer, I tried Tribes and had 6 mid-air shots with the DL.... I was blown away. In fact, I've never looked back. This mouse is one of the single-most important pieces in my gaming rig.

In closing, it's really about what you feel comfortable using. For me it's no contest: <a href="http://www.razerzone.com" "target=_new">The Razer. For others, it may be the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/Mouse/explorer.htm" "target=_new">Intellimouse Explorer. I just wanted to give you my impression of both. Try 'em out (if you can) and decide for yourself. Cheers!

Tank Racing?

Tread Marks is a game set to release this week, hoping to win over gamers with tank racing. Now the upside to this is, if the guy infront of you has too much of a lead...well blow him up. The pics are pretty cool, but there is not really much skill involved. I wouldn't get this game if you are into tank sims, better off with Panzer Elite. This game is for the fans of I'76 and Demolition Derby.

I just ran across a new registery cleaner "RegCleaner 2.4" over at www.tweakfiles.com. This thing is the best Ive used so far. It has a very nice GUI with manual control over what gets cleaned, starup programs cleanup and a simple backup system. I highly recommend this program.

This is what Tweakfiles had to say:
"RegCleaner is an easy-to-use program. With RegClean you can easily get rid of those old and obsolate registry entries which are created by software that you have destroyed ages ago. Note that this program is not like those other "registry cleaners", that searches any filenames from registry, then if the file doesn´t exist anymore then removes the registry key/value where this filename was. But RegCleaner shows you the list of software that are registered to registry and by checking checkboxes you select what software you doesn´t have anymore, and then RegClean removes all registry entries of those programs automatically."

Get it here: RegCleaner 2.4

Last month I wrote an article on the gun system from Act Labs. At the time none of the games supported appealed to me, so in turn I found the GS to be quite boring. But Glitter has a made a 2 player shooter out of Quake II with the lightguns. It also looks as if Glitter is working on Halflife. Maybe there is a future in the GS and this could be the first big step.

I got this from good ole' Pie4foo:"Pie's Tactics has updated their site today with two great new features. The first is a movie in .avi format created by KornKob, resident super tech guru, which shows off a basic room clearing exercise for SWAT trainees. The real action sequence is most definitely worth the download! And while you're downloading the clip, be sure to check out the new article by Pie. The article introduces the role of "Active Sniper" as a team support element. The Active Sniper is a player who uses his stealth and long-range capabilities to flank the opponent's defense while providing a backup role for primary assault team members. Sound complicated? Don't worry, it's not! And odds are, you'll find something you've never thought of in this article. Head on over to Pie's Tactics for all the goodies."

I do not know if you can call him a guy, he is a skull that floats and attacks by biting. He does have the special skill of taunting people with verbal abuse, which is good for many laughs. The people you meet in the game are all as odd and origional as Morte is, so expect the unexpected. The game actually caters to your playing style also, if you like to hack and slash it will offer more of that type action, or you can use your wits to talk your way out of situations. The voice acting in the game is very well done as is the story and execution of the plot. This is one of the best RPGs available at this time, so go grab a copy if you need a RPG fix.

Ultima IX Review
-
Witness and I had a bet on who would get the next frag in Unreal Tournament, well I lucked out and scored a kill on him, the prize was a choice of any game for the computer. I picked Ultima IX since it looks so great. I recieved the game in a timely manner from Wit (bless you) and proceeded to open the nice box. Inside I found the two CDs and even a cloth map along with various books that were very well written. The install went fine, took a while though since I picked a full install which took almost 800 megs. I started up the game and came across a few problems, I decided to put them in order below since there are so freggin many.

Graphics - Great, second to none. These great graphics are top notch, but you will need a top of the line 3D card. People have also been reporting problems with D3D, so use glide if you can.

Sound - The sounds are pretty well done, the music fits the scenes and fades in and out nicely. The people talking and surrounding noise is also well done, nothing to write home about though.

Gameplay - Total crap, the controls and gameplay are some of the worst I have ever seen in my many years of gaming. For one you can not change your keys! You also will get stuck on invisible things within the game all the time, expect to get hung up in open doors. I also noticed that you can not move forward and strafe at the same time like you can in most games, it seems Ultima IX will not accept two keystrokes at the same time. I also witnessed movement problems, one of these is that when you go forward and let off the key you keep going until you hit another key...this is one of the worst problems in the game. Sometimes the game will not react to your key presses and you have to hit the same key many times to get your character to move.

Frame Rates - I have a Pentium III 600, 639 megs of ram, a 3DFX Voodoo3 3000, and a MX300 sound card...with even this hardware the game runs like a slug. I could literally count the framerates, it was that bad. I tried many resolutions ranging from 640x480 to 1024x768 but they all had the same amout of choppiness. I had to lower the texture graphic setting to get a good frame rate...well a better frame rate, good is to strong of a word. If you use D3D on this game expect to do some serious 360 degree turns when you want to only turn 90 degrees.

Combat - Lame, lame, lame. I attacked rats and I would get poisoned every time they touched me. Creatures also spurt blood when you hit them....I hit a dog in the head and blood started shooting out his ass! It looked like he had monster hemoroids up his butt that were shooting blood like old faithful. I had a good laugh...not only at the blood but at how lame this game is. The AI is as bad as the rest of the game. Some creatures will attack back, others will stand still like they are statues. As I said before...lame, lame, lame.

Spells - Give me a freggin break, the spells suck. They are worthless and not even worth mentioning.

RPG Stuff - I found it odd that there was no screen to look at your experience and other useful information. Instead they give you a journal (a book that takes up the whole screen) and you have to open it and literally flip through page after page to get to the one containing the information you need. Get ready for some dejavu...lame, lame, lame.

Other - Items like lanters burn out almost as fast as a match, what is the deal with this? I went through about 3 lanters a night! Also your armor can only take a few hits before it is destroyed, what a joke.

I am so over this game I feel it is a waste of my time to even write about it any more. Origin promised to send a new patch CD to all the registered users...they need to also send a hammer to smash the crappy game with. I honestly think they did not beta test this game, it has a unfisished feel, I would rather scrape the dry skin from the feet of all the residents in a retirement home than play this game another minute.

I was looking through my collection of backup CDs and found a few with the old TAC designs on them. I thought you may find it interesting to see how it has evolved.
First Design - This design was copied a lot of by many pages, but it did give a large amout of news in a clean design. We were red and black back then. The flash intro was done by
myself when I was just learning the ropes, the music was done by our very own Thug. The original name of the team was Team US Army since we were all active or x-military guys. We were supposed to vote
on a name to replace US Army but I had started the design with tactical advantage as the title with the idea I was going to change it. The name stuck, as well as the players.
Second Design - I do not know what I was thinking, but I selected green and black for the design. This was a short lived color scheme, lol.
Third Design - Gold and black, the current TAC color scheme takes effect officially. Now TAC has a new look and tons og girls on the page, maybe I was going through a mid-life crisis when I did this page....
can you go through a mid-life crisis when you are still in your twenties?
And that brings us up to date, I forget the exact date TAC was founded but I would assume it was in the late summer of 1998. The members of TAC have formed lasting friendships and are among the most skilled
game players I have had the pleasure to know. As the guys say "TAC for life!"

2Mad RS Launcher

David Stumpf of 2Mad has created a very handy launcher for RS, I have found it much more useful than the IP Toolkit (which never worked right). Installation is very easy and painless. After installing you simply go to your program files and select the launcher. Once
it comes up you will notice many areas that are all well thought out. You now have an address book to keep those IPs that you go to all the time, not to mention it finds your mods and places them in a box that you can highlight
to load RS modded. This is a great option and makes this launcher stand out above any other program of its type. The 2Mad launcher allows you to change all the options within RS before loading the game, this
includes your mp settings, sounds, graphics, and every thing else you can think of. It also deletes the kit restrictions file on each load, all I can say is 2Mad did an
awesome job on this program. If you have not tried this launcher yet then I would do so now, you will never launch RS the old way again.
Game of the Year for 2000? It's got my vote. HALO is the next generation of gaming. Teamwork and squad-based combat are the rules of the day in this third-person shooter. For example, the gamer in the squad who's better at driving games should be behind the wheel of the jeep, while another player rides shotgun and a third man the mounted machine gun in the back. Another emphasis on teamwork is the choice of weapons. There's no BFG (Big F!@#in' Gun) in this game, and everything has it's own advantages and disadvantages.
