Microsoft will appeal to the US Supreme Court. This could drag on for years. By the time this is resolved, it will be irrelevant to most of us because of the rate technology advances. Do you think that Microsoft will be able to pull this one off?

Microsoft has already lost a great deal of its stranglehold on the software industry. There's just too many branches of software and internet applications for its 30,000 employees to create killer apps for. And the companies that are out there are too large to be squashed. I believe the partial monopoly on the Office Suites was beneficial to the industry; no small company would have been able to afford the development of such a powerful program. Microsoft was always out there to create killer products with their huge budget(like MS Office), because they knew that they were not invincible. I hope Microsoft continues to develop excellent software after the trial.

There are 3 choices for the Federal Judge: break the company; impose a hefty fine; force the company to reveal their secret software code to rivals. Breaking the company is much better in my opinion. A lot of companies that are much more clever than Microsoft should compete with them in a level-playing field, so that the consumers will be able to choose from a variety of products. Microsoft is still ahead with their recently released Windows 2000 which gives them clear advantage of other companies, esp. Linux, on its overall business applications. Right now, everybody is engaging in new outside PC environment businesses. We hope that this time, it will prevent Microsoft from monopolistic stances. Whatever happens to Microsoft, we should be the winners.

Yeah I agree with you Guru, but let's look at an alternative to the break-up of Microsoft. We don't want to create a situation where small segments compete against each other thereby undermining the golden rule of a monopoly "Allow for an elastic curve but only under the most dire of situations". Of course this includes bad things and some good things too... but more bad things.
Take CEO Jon Tilsen Thomas of
Antilka corporation. He thinks that there are bad things that can happen if things go bad.
