Communists took over China in 1949 and Kuo-Ming Dang (the party in power at the time) fled to Taiwan and vowed to be back in power one day. When these people fled from China to Taiwan, they wanted the Taiwanese people to obey them. Those who did not were killed in a lot of the cases. Since then, the tension between Taiwanese and people from China who fled to Taiwan in 1949 has kept Taiwan's political direction unclear. People whose parents or grandparents from China want to reunite with China, whereas a lot of Taiwanese people don't want to. They have suffered the pain of being tortured and killed by people from China generations ago and by reuniting with the communist China now, they are afraid that the tragedy will re-play itself. <br>On the other hand, the communist China claims that Taiwan belongs to them. The point is argurable. It is true that people who live in Taiwan and people in China look the same, yet the similar look does not make the two the same country. This is like Canada and the States and UK and Australia are not the same country. People in Taiwan and China, although may look the same, think very differently in many areas. Taiwan did not fall into the hand of the communism before, and should not in the future, if the majority of the people in Taiwan feel so. China has tried to use threat and forces to scare Taiwan into reuniting, yet their effort simply futher disgust the people in Taiwan. Who would like to be under the control of communism when their attutide continue to be so unreasonable and so undemoratic. China's threat of potential military action against Taiwan if the National progessive party's Candidate, Chen Shui-Bien, was elected as the president proved to be unsuccessful as could be seen in Chen's victory. Kuo-Ming Dang was kicked out of the office as a result. People in Taiwan expressed their unwillingness to yield to the threat and bullying of China. Peace and democracy is what people in Taiwan desire.
