<p>Diz a lenda que o Bungee Jump começou quando uma mulher da tribo
Bunlap, fugindo do seu agressivo marido escalou uma Banyan Tree (tipo
de árvore local). Vendo que ele continuava a persegui-la, rapidamente
a mulher amarrou cipós nos tornozelos e saltou, alcançando o solo
com segurança. Seu marido desesperado saltou em seguida mas sem o
auxílio do cipó, morrendo com a queda.</p>
<p>Desde então, os jovens homens desta tribo escalam torres de madeira
e saltam amarrados em cipós provando sua bravura.</p>
<p>Estes aborígenes nativos da ilha de Pentecost, situada no Oceano
Pacífico Sul começaram a ser conhecidos como &quot;Land Divers&quot;
quando a embarcação de pesquisa Yankee da &quot;National Geografics&quot;
com dois escritores fotógrafos desembarcaram na ilha.</p>
<p>Na edição de janeiro de 1955 eles contaram ao mundo sobre esses estranhos
nativos que tinham o costume de construírem uma torre e em determinada
data escalavam essa torre e saltavam em direção ao solo amarrados
a cipós.</p>
<p>Em meados de 1979, o clube de esportes perigosos de Oxford, Inglaterra,
apresentou ao mundo um novo esporte saltando da ponte Clifton em Bristol,
amarrados não por cipós mas por elásticos apropriados para esta prática.</p>
<p>Já nos anos 80, um Neo Zeolandes chamado A. J. Hackett, colocou o
Bungee Jump na mídia mundial, realizando um salto perfeito na Torre
Eifel, em plena luz do dia de Paris.</p>
<p>De lá para cá milhões de pessoas vem se aventurando nessa nova modalidade
esportiva.
