However, the Germans of the Weimar republic had another negative facing them, they had been ruled over by an authoritarian, autocratic government and they were _forced_ to accept liberal democracy by the victors in WWI. (Of course, the same thing happened to Japan after WWII but they didn't have the insane inflation/economic depression that went along with the Weimar Republic.) <br>
My opinion of the US government is that it is not heading to a totalitarian regime yet, but to an authoritarian regime. Power is less centralized in an authoritarian regime (compare Wilhelm's Germany to Hitler's Germany), some freedom exists, some political protest is possible. However, udesirable and immoral restrictions are placed on such freedoms. What might bring execution in a totalitarian state, such as publishing anti-government pamphlets, might be met by only jail time and police harrassment in an authoritarian state. However, an authoritarian state is still certainly undesirable, and to be avoided. I do believe, absent a panicked populace, that such a regime can be resisted through democratic means. On the other hand, I might be naive. But he sometimes gets a bit sloppy in his thinking. Of those 4.25 million Germans that had the guts to vote against Hitler, how many were anarchists? Answer: none (at least no honest ones). <br>

If you don't like your church, your school, your business, or your neighborhood, you can always leave. But you can't leave society. A single vote is not going to make any difference, but staying home on August 19, 1934 was the equivalent of voting for Hitler.
