The business models that emerge between free individuals to handle this supposed problem of ease of distribution will astound and amaze us. I personally think it will mean the end of the government monoply on solving the problem of the commons and we will have all kinds of ways that people innovate to fund development of great things. The more we can get force (i.e. government) out of the abundancy dilemma --- see www.v-t-o.org --- the better. <br>

For centuries in Europe, musicians and other artists were supported by patronage -- a rich person (usually a member of the nobility) would hire a favored musician or artist on a semi-permanent basis, providing enough money (and often living space) to allow the musician or artist to create without needing to worry about starvation.</p>
<p >There have been some recent positive developments in this direction on the Internet -- except that instead of having one patron per artist, we can <i>all</i> support artists. First there was <a href=http://www.paylars.com/>paylars</a>, which was created with tongue firmly in cheek in response to Metallica's Napster lawsuit. More recently though, <a href=http://www.fairtunes.com/>www.fairtunes.com</a> has stepped in to provide a means whereby fans can send donations directly to <i>any</i> musician.</p>
<p >I don't know of any analogous systems for other types of artists, though. Stephen King recently released the first installment of <a href=http://www.stephenking.com/plant_FAQ.html>a new serialized work</a> online, and solicited payment from fans on the honor system, with great success. Now, this isn't quite the same thing as voluntary donations, because King is setting the price and expects payments to be made by everyone who reads it -- it's really shareware fiction. But I think it's an interesting experiment.</p>
<p >Unfortunately I don't know of any means to make payments to other authors, or for any works besides The Plant. Nor do I know of any voluntary payment systems for movies, still pictures, software or any other creative works. I can easily live in a world with or without copyrights. It make not much difference. After a few years of adjustment, we''ll be back to exactly the same situation as former copyright holders find other non-governmental means to protect their property. Possibilities include encryption and keys, degradable recordings, and even signed contracts. <br>

But there is something I fear with the anti-copyright crowd, and that is their additional baggage. In the realm of software, their goal is not the elimination of copyrights, but the eliminate of closed source software (software where the source code is not available). Chief amongst them, Richard Stallman, has even advocated a tax on software, in his article The GNU Manifesto. <br>

Like it or not, software, music and other created works are indeed property. If the government ceased in its protection of land property rights, you would see a boom in deadbolts, window bars and guns.
