Robert Cringley over at PBS.org has posted an article <a href= http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20000713.html/> Here</a> that should be read, and then thought about for minute. The zoo over at /. is a ranting and a raving about what might happen if the FBI was capable of shutting down the net here in the US with the use of Carnivore boxes.
<br><br> So far I've only read that there are 20 to 50 Carnivore boxes in available at this time. But Cringley suggests that it would only take 6000 co-located boxes to accomplish the task, and hints that they might already be in place. And it comes to mind that it could be feasible. 6000 isp each colocating a box for $300 per month would work out to less than $22 million per year to have a covert government controlled system to disrupt or shutdown the net. And before you say, wow that's alot of money... The CIA's annual budget is $30 BBBBBBillion and it sinks in as to how cheap and effective for our elected government to have a simple and effective way to switch of the net, besides nuking the US.
