NATIONAL -- Last month both the Senate and House Judiciary Committees
agreed on legislation to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act of
1994 (VAWA). The Senate Committee reached an agreement on new
legislation (S. 2787) that would continue existing VAWA programs and
create several new initiatives, including transitional housing for
victims, a pilot program to reduce violence during children's visits and
stronger protections for elderly, disabled and immigrant women. The
legislation would authorize spending $645 million per year over the next
five years. The House Committee agreed on legislation (H.R. 1248) that
would renew VAWA funding for domestic violence programs. The House bill
also includes new amendments that would create a task force to
coordinate domestic violence research, target funds for disabled women,
have the Justice Department create a national standard for rape kits and
genetic sampling, and add domestic violence records to electronic
records checked for gun purchases. Floor votes by the full House or
Senate have not yet been scheduled, and may not occur until the fall.
