In it Stephenson speculates about what will become of Hong Kong in '97, and predicts a Chinese backlash against Western technology in the next couple of decades. Hong Kong shifting hands is old news now, and it occurs to me that other Slashdot readers must know more than I do about how things have been going there, from a technological perspective. Is Hong Kong transforming China, or is it the other way around? Was Stephenson his good ol' prescient self when he wrote this article, or have things taken unexpected turns? And how does that China-Linux announcement from a while back play into it?"</I>

I was just curious to know of what 'legal' websites there are out there that give away MP3's or some other kind of compressed music format. The only good site I have found so far is <A HERF="http://downloadsdirect.com">downloadsdirect.com</A>. This site has a lot of free downloads, and others that allow you to pay by song. Just curious as to know whether anyone else has found any other good sites out there?"</I> There is, of course, the ever popular <A HREF="http://www.mp3.com">MP3.Com</A> but are there other sites out there that legally distribute MP3s? Do others feel as I do that the RIAA should have answered this question a long time ago? (Especially considering the fuss they've made about <A HREF="http://www.napster.com/">Napster</a>.)

My plan was to get either a 1U or 2U system, or a complete PCB with a decent graphics card on it. I've been looking all over the Web, and on various websites to see if there are any Slimline PCs that are capable of running high-end Video Cards (like Matrox, 3dfx, or NVidia). All of the systems I've seen are the Intel, C&T, or some other chip which is fine & dandy for 2D, but 3D acceleration isn't there. Has anyone run across a 1U or 2U system, with a high-end video chip built into it, or with an AGP slot so I can use my own?"</I>

vt@home asks: <I>"It so happened that I have to find a provider again. @Home is not available at my current location, US West says my location is not good enough for DSL, yet, many DSL providers (Verio and Bazillion, to name a few) claim that they can provide me with at least 144K connection. It's alarming that most of the people who have any opinion about DSL, have a negative one (see <a href="http://www.dslreports.com/">DSL Reports</a> for one), and the positive opinions look suspiciously like stroturfers. Additional points of concern are the 1 year commitments, and the unusually long time wait time before the service is activated (4-6 weeks on paper could turn into months). So the question is, what is a reliable source that rates the DSL providers? Do you guys have anything to say about your DSL provider, no matter good or bad? If you ever switched from the cable modem to DSL (or back), how was it? Responses about Phoenix Metro will be much appreciated."</I>

They've been sued by their clients, and they don't pay us enough. It would be great if we could run the site without ads, but the hosting alone would kill us. We tried the donations route, but that's no good. My question is this: Which banner network is the least evil? Which lies the least? Which pays the best? use the MBONE to update the mirrors? I could satisy my burning
need for instant gratification *so* much sooner. Hell, why couldn't
I tune in to an MBONE broadcast from RedHat and get it at the
same time as the mirror sites? As I looked over the ancient (5-6 years

<A HREF="mailto:tex@opt1mus.com">TexTex</A> asks: <I>"I find myself lacking in many of the joys of the internet while at work, largely because of a particularly effective firewall. While it works great at keeping stuff out, it also keeps me in. FTP and HTTP proxies are the only available exit (no SOCKS). Also, I'm using a Mac so firewall support on many of the apps are not as flexible as I'd like. Napster, Gntuella, and Quicktime streams are unavailable (not to mention all those swell Yahoo internet games). Any ideas how a lone Mac user can escape from the inside?"</I>
