<center>What are MIDI files ?</center>

MIDI songs are sound files. Have you have heard of MP3 and RealAudio files? MIDI files are sound files, but differ from these other formats.
<br><br>
MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Device Interface, and nearly every 16-bit and 32-bit sound card is capable of playing these files. What differs MIDI from other sound formats is the fact that the music is not recorded, but composed - MIDI songs have to be composed through a digital keyboard ("piano"). WAV and MP3 songs can play the same music that is available on CDs and cassettes, but they can contain lyrics whereas MIDIs can only play the background music.

There are three basic advantages of MIDIs.

Firstly, MIDIs do not have any lyrics, making them ideal for use as karaoke music. So if you want to sing to your favorite tunes, download an MIDI and start karaoke-ing with your PC!
<br><br>
Secondly, the size of MIDI files is many times smaller than a comparable RealAudio or MP3 - a song that is 4 MB big in MP3 format may be as small as 0.04 MB in MIDI format! So you can download MIDIs a lot quicker than downloading big MP3s or RealAudio files.

Nearly every PC comes with built-in support for playing MIDIs. Most people use <a href="http://www.windowsmedia.com/" target="_blank" title="Click here to download Windows Media Player">Media Player</a> by Microsoft for playing MIDI songs - this is a free software that comes built-in with Windows. You can also use <a href="http://www.winamp.com" target="_blank" title="Click here to download WinAmp">WinAmp</a> for playing MIDI files.
