<p id=PubSt4P><span id=PubSt4F>La producción de café </span><span id=PubSt5F>tomó auge a partir de 1970 y ocupó a través del tiempo el segundo lugar en las exportaciones del país después del banano. Llega a alcanzar el primer lugar como rubro de exportación, situación fortalecida por el paso del huracán Mitch, ya que las cosechas en su mayoría, no fueron afectadas por el fenómeno atmosférico.<br></span></p>

<p id=PubSt5P><span id=PubSt5F>El café constituye una importante actividad económica en 15 de los 18 departamentos del país e involucra a más de 100,000 productores y alrededor de 600,000 personas dependen directamente de este rubro, el cual absorbe más del 13&#37; de la fuerza laboral rural. Actualmente la producción de café supera los cuatro millones de quintales anuales. <br></span></p>

Los intermediarios&nbsp; comercializan 80 por ciento de la producción nacional<br></span></p>
