<p><b><i>Mission</i></b> </p>

<p>The mission of the activities department of Sheldon Jackson
College is to provide, safe, educational and fun programs to
develop community and unity on campus within the mission
statement of Sheldon Jackson College. The activities department
works closely with outdoor recreation classes, campus ministry
and the Office of Residence Life to provide a well rounded array
of things to do both indoors and outdoors.</p>

<p>Participation in campus activities is always fully encouraged
and any suggestions students have are taken seriously and
frequently result in new activities. The education which students
receive in both academics and activities at Sheldon Jackson
College will prepare them for the adventure of a lifetime. </p>

<p>The activities program at Sheldon Jackson College is made up
of three primary components: outdoor recreation, intramural
sports, and social\educational programs. Typically, the following
kinds of activities are offered.</p>

<b><i>Outdoor Recreation</i></b> </p>

<ul>
    <li>Backpacking and camping are readily available activities,
        using trails within easy access from campus which lead
        into the Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate
        rainforest in North America.</li>
    <li>Sitka Sound and the surrounding coastal waters are home
        to myriad wildlife: whales, seals, Stellar sea-lions,
        otters, and much more.</li>
    <li>Kayaking or sightseeing trips on the water are a great
        way to relax and enjoy the beauty of Southeast Alaska. </li>
    <li>Mountain biking is popular in Sitka, and the Forest
        Service is currently working on developing some trails in
        the area. </li>
    <li>Scuba diving is also a popular activity in the area.
        Certification is available in Sitka.</li>
    <li>Sitka's waters are also a great place for deep sea, fly
        and sport fishing. </li>
</ul>

<p><b><i>Intramural Program</i></b> </p>

<p>The intramural programs at Sheldon Jackson range from quick
pick-up games to elaborate tournaments in a number of sports like
basketball and volleyball, and even ping pong. </p>

<ul>
    <li>Basketball is a one of the most popular sports on campus,
        and the college hosts a number of different local
        tournaments throughout each year.</li>
    <li>Both indoor and outdoor soccer are played throughout the
        year at S.J.</li>
    <li>The Hames Physical Education facility has two racquetball
        courts. </li>
    <li>A full length frisbee golf course has been plotted by
        students and both golf and ultimate frisbee are played
        regularly on campus.</li>
</ul>

<p><b><i>Social/educational Programs</i></b></p>

<p>There are more to the activities at Sheldon Jackson than just
fun and games. Student clubs, campus ministry, residence life
staff, and the director of activities offer a wide array of
activities which provide something for everyone: </p>

    <li>Quilting and craft work</li>
    <li>Chess tournaments</li>
    <li>Casino nights</li>
    <li>Dances</li>
    <li>Live musical performances</li>
    <li>Film festivals</li>
    <li>Cultural events such as Native carving demonstrations,
        traditional storytelling techniques, and Alaska Native
        dancing</li>
</ul>

<p><b><i>Getting involved in outdoor recreation</i></b></p>

<p>Students have the potential through student activities to gain
on-the-job training in outdoor recreation techniques as a student
guide. Eligibility hinges on experience and requires at least one
semester as a full-time student at Sheldon Jackson College. </p>

<p><b><i>Getting involved in activities</i></b> </p>

<p>The Associated Student Body of Sheldon Jackson College has a
position of Vice President of Student Activities which provides
experience in governmental affairs, management and event
planning. </p>
