financial aid works could mean the difference between attending
the college of your choice and having to attend the cheapest one.
So, as ridiculous and convoluted as college financial aid has
become in America today, do your best to plow through the
following information. It will open doors for you.</font></p>

aid for collegians comes from four &quot;pots&quot;:</i></b></font></p>

<p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">If you are an <b><i>Alaska
resident</i></b>, the following aid programs are available to
you:</font></p>

Student Loan <i>(must be repaid after graduation) </i></font></li>

Loan <i>(for those entering </i><strong><i>fisheries</i></strong><i>;
forgivable) </i></font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">Rural
Teacher Loan <i>(for those from a </i><strong><i>rural</i></strong><i>
education district who return to a </i><strong><i>rural</i></strong><i>
district to teach; forgivable) </i></font></li>

<p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">Unfortunately,
if you are <u>not</u> an <b><i>Alaska resident</i></b>, it is
unlikely that you will be able to use your home state's financial
aid at Sheldon Jackson. Most states do not allow their state tax
money to leave their states. Check with your high school guidance
or transfer counselor about your state, however.</font></p>

height="114"><font size="5"><strong>Pot #3: Sheldon Jackson
College</strong></font></p>
<p align="center">&nbsp;</p>
<p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">In addition to
having one of the lowest tuitions for an accredited private,
liberal arts college in the US <i>($7250 for two semesters!)</i>,
SJ gives four <b>scholarships</b>:</font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New"><b>A. The
Alaska Scholarship</b> <i>(for </i><strong><i>Alaska</i></strong><i>
residents)</i></font></p>
<ol>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">If your
HS <i>(or college if you're a transfer student)</i> GPA
is 3.2 or above, you'll receive a full-tuition <i>($7000)
</i>scholarship from us. </font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">If your
HS <i>(or college if you're a transfer student)</i> GPA
is 2.75 to 3.19, you'll receive a half-tuition <i>($3500)
</i>scholarship from us.</font></li>
</ol>
<p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New"><b>B. The
Honor Scholarship</b> <i>(for residents of states </i><strong><i>other
than Alaska</i></strong><i>)</i> - The College has 20 Honor
Scholarships of $3000 each. These are given &quot;first come,
first served,&quot; using the date of the enrollment deposit to
prioritize.</font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New"><b>C. The
Referral Scholarship </b>- An elite group of SJ
&quot;friends&quot; are <strong>each</strong> given a $3500
scholarship that they may &quot;refer&quot; to a <u>new</u> SJ
student. This elite group is comprised of dues-paying SJ alumni,
VIMs, work groups, Humpback, and College Trustees. We give 20 of
these Referral Scholarships, again, &quot;first come, first
served,&quot; using the date of the enrollment deposit to
prioritize.</font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New"><b>D. The
Legacy Scholarship</b> </font></p>
<ol>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">Any SJ
student who is the dependent of an SJ<b> degree-holder</b>
(HS, JC, or College) receives a $7000 scholarship.</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">Any SJ
student who is the dependent of a former SJ <b>student </b>(anything
less than a degree-holder) receives a $3500 scholarship.</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">If one
&quot;family&quot; has more than one member at SJ
concurrently: </font></li>
</ol>
<ul>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">If there
are <u>two</u>, each receives a $2000 tuition discount.</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">If there
are <u>three</u>, each receives a $3000 tuition discount.</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">If there
are <u>more than three</u>, each receives a $4000 tuition
discount.</font></li>
</ul>

you're not Presbyterian but active in your <b>home
church</b>, many denominations have aid available
for collegians. </font></li>

local <b>Rotary, Elks, Moose</b>, et al. clubs
often give scholarships. </font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New"><b>You
or your parents' employer</b> may have an aid

being considered for financial aid at Sheldon Jackson</b></font></p>

</i><strong><i>unlike</i></strong><i> most other colleges-</i>we
do not require a separate application to be considered for
financial aid. Generally we ask that you fulfill only two
conditions to be considered:*</font></p>

<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">Complete

Online)</u></font></a><font size="2"
face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New"> <i>(FAFSA)</i>.</font></li>
</ol>

</ol>
<p align="center"><font size="2" face="Tahoma"><b>Awarding
policies</b></font></p>
<ol>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">The
College always awards students <b>federal and state aid
before we award SJ money</b>, because our scholarship
endowment isn't unlimited. This is why we require the </font><a
href="http://www.fafsa.ed.gov" target="_blank"><font
size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">FAFSA</font></a><font
size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">.</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">No
college is allowed to give the student who receives
federal and/or state funds more than the government says
they &quot;need.&quot; &quot;Need&quot; is calculated by
subtracting the student's &quot;estimated family
contribution&quot; (EFC) as determined by the </font><a
href="http://www.fafsa.ed.gov" target="_blank"><font
size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">FAFSA</font></a><font
size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New"> from the
college's costs.</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">The <b>renewability</b>
of SJ scholarships is handled by the Honor's Day
Committee. In the spring, the College has a Honor's Day
celebration. At this time, students submit an application
for scholarships to the Honor's Day Committee. This
Committee determines awards for returning students, based
upon the funds available to the College at that time. New
students who received scholarships from SJ will most
likely continue to receive them, if they have done well
academically, and they been contributing members of the
SJ community.</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">The
Alaska, Honor, Legacy, and Referral Scholarships, and the
Visit Incentive tuition discount are all taken from the
College's own revenues. Therefore, because we are not a
wealthy school, we cannot &quot;stack&quot; these awards.
So, for example, if you receive a Legacy Scholarship, we
probably cannot <strong>also</strong> give you the Visit
Incentive tuition discount.</font></li>
</ol>
<p><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">So, let's <u>summarize</u>:</font></p>

<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">Each
student pays a different amount to attend college,
because each student's finances and abilities are
different. </font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New"><u>You</u>
do not know what it will cost <u>you</u> to attend
Sheldon Jackson College until you've received <u>your</u>
Award Letter from us.</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">We cannot
send <u>your</u> Award Letter until you are admitted to
SJ and have completed a <i>Free Application for </i><b><i>Federal</i></b><i>
Student Aid</i> </font><a href="http://www.fafsa.ed.gov"
target="_blank"><font size="2"
face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">(FAFSA Online)</font></a><font
size="2" face="Comic Sans MS,Courier New">. </font></li>

brutally honest, though, there </i><b><i>may</i></b><i> be

Alaska financial aid, additional forms are necessary.
These are available from September Horton in the SJ
Admission &amp; Financial Aid Office, however. </i></font></li>

our Legacy Scholarship, verification of alumni status and
family relationships may be necessary.</i></font></li>
