<p>Sheldon Jackson College has served the Native People of Alaska since humble beginnings in 1878 as a training center for Tlingit Indians.  The College continues to preserve and honor its Christian heritage through a relationship with the Presbyterian Church (USA); and as the oldest educational enterprise in the State, it now attracts students from widely diverse backgrounds, locally, nationally, and internationally.</p>
<p>The Mission of Sheldon Jackson College is to:

<ul>
<li>Provide high quality undergraduate instruction in the arts and sciences</li>

<li> Offer major fields of study directed to the socio-economic needs of Alaska and the Pacific Rim</li>

<li>Enrich the educational experience through a dynamic cultural mix of students</li>

<li>Address issues and concerns of the Native people of Alaska throughout its curriculum</li>

<li>Encourage self examination from a spiritual perspective</li>

</p>

<p>Stemming from the Reformed tradition, the College advocates that God's sovereign presence is revealed in all forms of truth.  While acknowledging the centrality of Christ as revealed in the Bible, Sheldon  Jackson College welcomes people of all beliefs, encouraging spiritual development and growth in conjunction with their academic pursuits.  Students are thereby invited to examine their own lives in the light of the life and teaching of Jesus Christ.</p>

<p><h3>Goals of the Mission</h3>

In providing educational opportunities to develop meaningful vocations and lives of compassion and service toward all people, competent graduates are sent into a challenging world:

<li>Qualified to develop and manage our natural resources</li>

<li>Certified to educate our people</li>

<li>Prepared in the field of aquatic resources</li>

<li>Versed in the liberal arts, or </li>

<li>Equipped to succeed in business</li>

</ul>
In accomplishing this mission, the College employs committed, competent faculty and staff and utilizes Alaska's abundant natural resources in offering unique learning experiences.</p>

The goal of the curricula of Sheldon Jackson College is to provide for students an environment that includes learning experiences in:

<li>A broad range of the arts and sciences</li>

<li>The development of intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual well-being, so that       graduates are well informed and responsible citizens of the global community</li>

<li> A concentrated academic major</li>
