little else, as the rivalry has grown into one of the most anticipated match-ups for both teams over the years.
<P>
The Auburn and LSU rivalry stems back to 1901 when the Tigers traveled to Baton Rouge and posted a 28-0 shutout victory over LSU. The 28 points is the largest margin of victory either team would enjoy until the 1972 game when LSU defeated Auburn 35-7 to equal the 28 point margin.
<P>
More than 90 years later the rivalry has intensified into one of the most intriguing games of the season as the two schools battle on the field. Over the last two decades the average margin of victory in the series was 6.4 points a game. The number is inflated some because of a 34-10 victory by Auburn in the 1993 game.

Outside Linebackers Coach Joe Whitt who has been with Auburn over the last two decades has been a part of this growing rivalry.
"What makes a rivalry is when two teams play close, intense games, and that is exactly what Auburn and LSU has done while I have been here and even before I started here," he explained.
<P>
One of the more memorable Auburn- LSU games took place in 1988 at Baton Rouge and has been coined, "The night the earth shook" because the fans were so intense that the noise registered on the Richter Scale.
Defensive Line Coach Pete Jenkins, then the defensive coordinator for LSU, has been on both sides of the rivalry and remembers the 1988 game as his most memorable. The Auburn Tigers came into Baton Rouge as national championship contenders and left with a 7-6 defeat at the hands of the Bengal Tigers.
Auburn led 6-0 late into the fourth quarter when LSU went on an 80-yard touchdown drive capped off by an Eddie Fuller touchdown reception to give LSU the victory.
<P>
Jenkins remembered the fans going crazy, but thinking to himself, "If Auburn scores a field goal then these fans may hang me before the night is over."
Whitt and Jenkins reminisced on the 1988 and 1989 games by recalling that which ever team got into the endzone ended up being the team that was victorious.
LSU may have scored the touchdown in the 1988 game, but Auburn and star tailback Stacy Danley got their revenge in the 1989 game. Danley rushed for 117 yards in that game and scored the game winning touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead the Tigers to the 10-6 victory.
<P>
"We were hungry for revenge after the 1988 game and the victory afterwards was bittersweet," Danley said. "The defense played great in that game and really kept the pressure on LSU quarterback Tommy Hodson."
The Auburn and LSU rivalry has continued to offer exciting games well into the 90's, with the 1994 game being the most heralded of the contests. Auburn had five interceptions in the fourth quarter off of LSU quarterback Jamie Howard. The Tiger defense returned three of those for touchdowns, to come back from a 23-9 deficit, and held on to win the game 30-26.
<P>
Auburn fans will not forget the 1996 game, even though it was a classic with LSU holding on to a 19-15 victory. The Bayou Bengals intercepted a potential game tying two-point conversion attempt after Auburn rallied to a 17-15 deficit as the clock wound down and ran it back for two points of their own. But, fans will remember this game mostly as "The night the barn burned." Auburn's old gymnastic facility, located just behind the stadium, burned to the ground during the game.
The 1998 game has its own unique script to be played out and the players, coaches and fans eagerly wait to find out which team will end up the victors on this night of a classic, hard fought college football game.
