for most athletes the thrill of victory is an unparalleled high that carries them through grueling practices and nagging injuries. But, senior wide receiver Errick Lowe looks to something different for inspiration, his daughter Tamiyah.

"Having her in my life puts things in perspective for me and nothing brightens my day more than to be able to talk to her," Lowe said.
"Tamiyah means the world to me," Lowe said. "I had a great pair of parents who were always there for me. That is the kind of parent I want to be for my daughter."

It was the support Lowe received from his parents that helped him excel as an athlete in high school and made him one of the most sought after college prospects in the South.

As a junior wide receiver at Lake Worth High School in Lake Worth, Fla., Lowe reeled in 42 passes for 726 yards and 10 touchdowns. After making 26 receptions for 380 yards with a touchdown his senior year, Lowe was named to the Atlanta Journal Constitution "Super Southern 100" and the "Super South 100" by Pigskin Preps.

"I was heavily recruited by most of the schools in the Southeast, but Florida, Florida State, Miami, Auburn and Georgia were the main ones I considered," Lowe said. "I chose Auburn because I felt like I could play early and also have a chance to play baseball."

Besides being an all-state selection in football as a senior and named to the Florida "Super Seniors Top 25," Lowe was a standout baseball player.
"My first love has always been baseball. In fact, I didn't step on the football field until I was encouraged to do so by our high school coach, Don Rosser," Lowe said.

"The coaching staff saw my hand-eye coordination in baseball and thought I would be a good receiver."

However, Lowe's baseball career was put on hold with the birth of Tamiyah in the spring of 1996, just after his freshman year.

"I came to play both sports at Auburn, but things haven't worked out for me, yet," Lowe added. "I plan on going out for the team this spring and test my skills."

In high school Lowe was an outfielder and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the June 1995 draft.

The decision to take the money and play professional baseball or to play college football was a tough choice to make, so Lowe turned to his mother for help in making such an important decision.

"My mom encouraged me to go to school and get my education. Her advice was a big factor for me coming to school instead of opting for professional baseball," Lowe said.

Although Lowe's decision to attend college has paid off for him, his advice to other high school athletes is somewhat different.

"I would tell the athlete to listen to his heart and not listen to anyone else," Lowe said. "If playing baseball is what you want to do, then that is what you have to do."

Since deciding to play for the Tigers, Lowe has enjoyed his share of success on the football field.

As a freshman in 1995, Lowe played in 11 games and started against Mississippi State and Arkansas. That season he caught 12 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown, including a season-high of three passes for 66 yards against arch-rival Alabama.

Lowe's efforts against the Crimson Tide that year paid off with a 31-27 victory and became one of his most memorable moments on the Plains.

"I have never seen anything like the celebration with the fans after that game," Lowe said. "Watching our team celebrate along with the fans was incredible."

Another memorable moment for Lowe also came in 1995 when he scored his first career touchdown.

"We were playing Arkansas and we had fallen behind, but we made a big comeback in the second half," Lowe said. "I caught a two-yard pass with about 18 seconds left and that was my first touchdown. Then I caught the two-point conversion that brought us within two points of tying."

Although the Tigers recovered the onside kick, a potential game-winning field goal fell short and the Hogs escaped with the 30-28 victory.
Since his freshman year Lowe has become one of the Tigers' most dependable receivers, playing in every game since 1995.

But Lowe's development as a player has not been limited to his actions on the football field. He has become a team leader.

"Errick has really shown senior leadership this year, something we did not expect from him," Auburn wide receivers coach Larry Edmondson said. "He is a fighter and never wants to lose. It eats at him to lose and he bounces back each week and plays hard."

Part of Lowe's ability to excel on the gridiron stems from his knowledge of the game and his ability to understand defensive schemes, Edmondson added.
"His knowledge of the game is one of his strengths. His biggest plays for us are not the spectacular catches, but catches that he makes when he is the hot receiver and makes a good read on the defense," Edmondson said.

On the field, Lowe's ability to make those big plays and read defenses is backed up by a self-confidence that has developed over four years of playing major college football.

"I feel like I am aggressive on the field and I believe I have the hands to make the plays when it counts the most," Lowe said.

For Lowe, the aggressiveness he displays as a football player is surpassed only by the love he feels for his daughter as a father.

"It is a special time for me when I am with her," Lowe said. "I really enjoy just being with her and having fun with her."

As a son, and now a father, Lowe understands the importance of having a caring, supportive family when coping with the dilemmas we all face in life.

"My father has had the biggest influence on me. He has always been there for me when I needed him," Lowe said. "He never missed a game I played in through high school and I know if he could come to all my college games he would. And I want to have that kind of relationship with my daughter."
