auburn has been through a traumatic experience in the last eight days.

They have been painful, difficult days. Days of change and transition always are.

But, as William Faulkner said of man, "Mankind will not merely endure; Mankind will prevail..."

So it is with Auburn. Auburn will not merely endure; Auburn will prevail.
A very wise man, my Daddy, once told me something I have remembered all of my life. You would do well to remember it all of your life. "The only thing certain in life is change. How you handle that change will determine your happiness and your success..."

There are many varying opinions on the events of last week, all of them valid, because truth, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

No matter how one may have felt about the events of last week, and no matter what one chose to believe, this much is certain:
Auburn people gathered once again and cheered as the most important people of all, our players, walked the Tiger Walk. The band played, and the band played on...

And the players played as well as they have played all year. They had reason to play: for both their coaches, for themselves -- this, after all, is their football team -- and for Auburn. For Auburn.

Before and after the game, the sky was clear and blue. And the band played on...

Let it never be doubted that Coach Bowden will go on to much success as a coach or in whatever field or profession he chooses to follow. He will succeed because he's made of what is commonly called the "right stuff."

And Auburn will go on to much success as well. Never doubt it. Not for an instant. Not for a second. Not for a moment.
The British have a saying for times like these: "The King is Dead; Long Live the King..."

The meaning of those words are simple, but direct. The old king is gone. His honor and glory remain and will be remembered and honored forever. But the time has come to move on. "Long Live the King." The new king.

These words and this same thought were expressed in the program for Coach Bowden's first game at Auburn. Now they are being used to describe another change and another transition.

The only thing certain in life is change.

The time has come for Auburn to move on. In the days and weeks ahead, long after we have forgotten the score of last week's game, let us remember the spiritual texture of last Saturday afternoon. It was symbolic. The sky was clear and blue, a deep blue, and the band played on... Through all the turmoil, through all the strife and uncertainty, the band played on.
As it ever shall.

The Auburn Spirit is the human spirit at its best.
Auburn will not merely endure; Auburn will prevail.

There are words in the musical "Fiddler On The Roof" that are apropos for our situation. Read them carefully. Read them and ponder them.

"Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset.
Swiftly go the years,
One season following another,
Laden with happiness and tears..."
Last week was a time for tears.
Happiness is just around the corner.

For Coach Bowden.
And for Auburn.
