although not glamorous, special teams can decide the outcome of a game.

The most recent example that left a lasting impression with Auburn fans was Jaret Holmes' 39-yard field goal with 15-seconds to play to defeat arch-rival Alabama last season at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

One player that was instrumental in Holmes' game-winning kick was snapper Brent Turner. Turner, although often overlooked because of his anonymous role as deep snapper, has worked hard and persevered to live a dream to play on fall Saturdays at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Turner, arrived at Auburn from Wetumpka High School, where in addition to deep snapper he also played offensive guard and linebacker. As a senior he led Wetumpka with 115 tackles while playing linebacker.

Although recruited by several schools as a senior, Turner turned down several scholarship offers to attend Auburn and fulfill a dream he had since the early 1980's when he began attending Auburn games with his parents.

"I figured I had a chance of coming in and playing here and I don't think I would have been happier anywhere else," Turner said. "It had always been a big dream to play here. I told myself I would regret it if I didn't come and give it a shot."

Turner, who is a four year starter at deep snapper, also plays on the punt coverage team and is among the first downfield on punt coverage. He earned a starting job as a walk-on early in the 1995 season before being lost for the season with a knee injury in the Florida game. Turner had to work hard both mentally and physically to return for the 1996 season.

"I didn't know whether or not I would return as a starter or I would come back and get a scholarship," he explained. "The hardest part of the injury to overcome was the mental part."

Shortly before the start of the 1996 season, Turner was awarded a scholarship and handled all deep snaps for placement kicks and punts during the season. He also played on the punt coverage team and recorded five tackles. Last season, Turner was the deep snapper for all kicks and recorded an impressive 12 tackles including nine solo stops while on the punt coverage team.

Although involved with the daily rigors of football and school, he realizes there are more important things in life than football. Turner is the President of the Auburn Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

"If God is not first in your life nothing else counts," Turner said. "He is the most important thing in my life. Then comes my family and then my education."

Turner has many memories while playing at Auburn, although two stand out above the rest.

"The game winning field goal against Alabama last year and when I tackled Kevin Faulk two years ago when I had a pulled hamstring are my most memorable moments as a player."

Turner also did something very special after the Alabama game last year when he and Rob Pate, Jeremy Zills and Alex McRee presented a game ball to John Henry Vaughn a family friend who was diagnosed with cancer but still managed to make it to the game because he wanted to be in the atmosphere one last time.

"It was real special to him that we did that for him," said Turner. "It was really special for me that we had someone that cared so much about Auburn football. He reminded me a lot of myself when I was younger."

Turner is scheduled to graduate in the spring with a degree in Marketing Education and wants to go into teaching.

"I plan to teach marketing in high school and coach football. Hopefully I'm going to find a job within the state where I can teach and coach."

Although Turner doesn't receive much publicity because of his role, he worked hard and found his niche and excels through his anonymity.

"I am put in a position where I am not a superstar and I have never wanted that. I found my place to play college football here."
