when you look at the Auburn football sideline, you see the players and the assistant coaches. What you probably don't see are the graduate assistants that roam the sidelines and man the press box as the Tigers take the field. Besides not getting the glamour and attention of the others coaches, Rory Segrest and John Turner have just one problem.

"Probably the worst thing about this is not getting paid," Segrest said whose wife works an extra job to help support them. "But being able to coach and work with the young men helps me take my mind off of the money, but it would sure be nice to get paid."

Both Turner and Segrest have been with Auburn since 1997 and both plan on graduating and hopefully moving on to coaching in the future.

"My brother is a coach, my father was a coach, and my sister is a Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleader, so I kind of feel like I need to be around football," Turner said. "I love coaching, I have been doing it for 11 years and I have been around coaches for my whole life, and football is just in my blood."

There is life outside of football for both of them. Segrest and Turner both are in graduate school working on degrees in Health Promotions and Physical Education, respectively. After all is said and done on the field and in the classroom, both are too exhausted to do much of anything else.

"Whenever I get a free weekend, I rest. My wife and I will go out to eat and see a movie, but most of all I rest," Segrest said.

"I don't do much of anything on my free weekends," Turner said. "I just go out and have a good time. I like to jog, but other than that, I just hang out."
Despite the few negatives their jobs hold, there are numerous positives. Each are in charge of the scout team and have responsibilities in practice and during the game. Turner is offensive line coach Rick Trickett's right hand man.

"During practice and during the game I am coach Trickett's third eye. I watch for blitzes, check to make sure everyone is doing their assignments, and pretty much help coach Trickett out as much as possible," Turner said.

Turner and Trickett share a good comradery. During a practice before the Georgia game last year, while it was raining, the offensive line went after Trickett to try and throw him in the mud. However, Trickett ran away leaving Turner to be victimized by more than 10, 300-pound linemen. Turner was left covered in mud following that experience.

"That was probably the funniest thing that has happened since I have been here," Turner said. "He just ran away and left me to deal with those guys."

Segrest, who played and coached at Alabama, said that besides coaching in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game last year, the highlight of his coaching career at Auburn was the victory against the Tide last year.

"Not losing to Alabama was the best thing to happen to me last year," Segrest said, who works with the defensive backs. "If we would have lost I would have been extremely embarrassed and would not have heard the end of it."

The opportunities given to both Segrest and Turner by the coaches here at Auburn University will lead them to jobs after graduation.

"This is a stepping stone for me, I would like to work my way up the ladder and become a head coach myself," Segrest said. "The coaches and players here have given me the chance to become a better coach myself therefore helping down the line."

Each takes pride in their work and they will let the players know if something is not right. However, both Segrest and Turner feel that both the other coaches and players respect the job that they do.

"Working at Auburn has been a positive experience for me, it has helped me reach my goal of graduating. It is helping me reach my goal of getting a full time college job," Segrest said.
