What do these people have in common? David Housel, athletic director at Auburn University; Mark Bochleman, sports information director at North Carolina State; Jason Peevy, director of University Relations at Erskine College in South Carolina.

Still not sure? Here are some additional clues. Jeff Romero, associate SID at Ole Miss; Chris Bell, director of media services for the Tennessee Sports Festival; Chuck Gallina, associate media relations director at Auburn.

The first common thread these all share is they worked as student assistants in Media Relations (Sports Information) here at Auburn. There are many more success stories in addition to these.

Clay Ingram just completed his first month on the job as sports information director at Auburn-Montgomery, while Ronn Hollis and Jed Glover hold marketing and public relations posts, respectively, with HealthSouth Corporation. Lee Eiland is assistant SID at Oklahoma State. The list could go on and on, but I believe the picture is coming clear.

I have the opportunity daily to work with some of this country's finest young people. Current Auburn administrators, Housel and assistant athletic Buddy Davidson, enjoyed those opportunities for many years before me.

The advantage I have is the opportunity to learn from them all...the students, Housel and Davidson. More than a quarter century of Media Relations expertise is just a quick phone call or a short walk down the hall in either direction.

The second thing all these people share is a love for Auburn. After 16 years in this business, including three as a student assistant myself, I know for a fact you don't get rich as a media relations student assistant.

Most are volunteers. For the ones who are compensated, the pay scale breaks down to about $2 per hour, or less.

These are young men and women the fans never see, yet Auburn athletes and coaches know who they are. Auburn athletic administrators know too, as well as state, regional and national media.

By the close of Summer Quarter three more Auburn media relations student assistants had earned the degrees and have now moved on.

Ray Kyliavas is headed to Texas and then to Fort Benning to fulfill his military obligations and will most likely end up a special forces agent of some kind. Richard Schmitz is a graduate student in political science at the University of Maryland and unless I miss my guess, headed for a seat in the U.S. Senate.

Adam Kelley was just named interim Sports Information Director at Alabama A&M University.
All will be missed. All took advantage of their opportunities at Auburn.

Several more are waiting in the wings. There is no doubt most will be added to the list of success stories.

In all, close to 20 students, more than two-thirds of them volunteers, will be sacrificing any semblanceof a social life on a football Saturday in Auburn today. So to them, and hundreds more volunteers like them around the stadium today, a heart-felt thank you.

It has to be a labor of love.
