For decades, Auburn's athletes have worn uniforms made right here in Alabama. And for decades, the good people at Russell Athletic have made Auburn's attire one of the most attractive in the country.

Auburn continues that tradition this fall as the Tigers begin the a five-year deal to wear the clothing of the Alexander City-based Russell. The $2.9 million agreement makes the Fortune 500 apparel company, which employs 11,000 Alabamians, the official uniform supplier of all 20 Auburn athletic teams.

And to kick off the renewed relationship with a bit of a spark, the Tigers' football jerseys have undergone a slight change. Auburn will be one of the first collegiate teams to wear jerseys with tackle-twill, drop-shadow block numbers. The plain white numbers of the past are now accented by orange.

"The new jerseys are something that I find very attractive," Coach Terry Bowden said. "We're excited about it, Russell's excited about it and I think the fans will be as well. The fans will make the final decision, but it's a pretty subtle change.

"I think we have the prettiest uniforms in the country and this will be a nice change for us," Bowden added.

Not only will Auburn's players be wearing Russell uniforms and apparel, but all Auburn coaches, trainers, managers and assistants will have the Russell look as well.

"We'll have as fine an overall sideline package as anyone in the country, because Russell has provided us with a full line of attire which will also be what the fans will be wearing," Bowden said.

After flirtations from other apparel makers, Auburn decided to stay with Russell, which made an attractive offer to keep supplying Auburn with its Orange and Blue.

With their agreement, Russell and Auburn have not only ended all doubt about what uniforms the Tigers will wear, but have also made it possible for Auburn fans and supporters throughout the nation to wear the same type of apparel that the Auburn coaches and players wear on game day.

"Russell and the Auburn Athletic Department came together and worked so hard to make the contract work so that we could be together that it is imperative that every Auburn person that walks into a store buys nothing but Russell," Bowden said.

"I think every Auburn person should be excited that the two of us were able to come together because Russell is right down the road. It wasn't easy and those were tough decisions, but Russell has moved in a totally new direction by taking away the entire sideline package from some very competitive people," Bowden said.

Nowadays when Auburn people talk about their Tigers and think about the beloved Auburn jersey, a name that will most likely be mentioned in the same breath is Russell.

"You would love to always be able to do business with your neighbors because it is important and we're able to do that with Russell," Bowden added.

As for the new jerseys, Bowden says the fans will be the final judges on that issue. It won't be the first time Auburn fans have gone through a jersey style change. In fact, it won't be the first time this decade.

Auburn has always printed the players' names on the backs of the jerseys for bowl games because the game jerseys were gifts to the players. It wasn't until the 1991 season though that the Tigers wore jerseys with their names printed on the back.

While this most recent change is not as significant or as demanded by the fans as the name change was, it should prove to be a hot conversation and debate topic for the duration of the season.

One fan, George Collier, saw the new jerseys first hand at Fan Day and seems to like the new change. "I've been a fan since around 1978 and have watched Auburn football over the years," he said. "I like the change and think that most of the fans will like it too."

The popularity of the revamped jerseys remains to be seen, but one thing that has stayed the same on the Plains is the Auburn people's love of their football team. And Auburn people love for their football team to win. Now, with Russell's help, the Tigers' will just look better while doing that winning.
