what makes a football game between two teams a rivalry? The school's proximity to one another is a factor, obviously. A sustained history of competition between the two is also important.

But perhaps the most important ingredient for a rivalry are the intangibles. The last minute comebacks, the goal line stands and the heroic performances from the most unlikely of players can elevate a regularly scheduled game into a yearly showdown.

Since 1898 Auburn and Georgia have met every year on the football field in just such a showdown.

As the Deep South's oldest continuous rivalry, the annual clash between the Bulldogs and the Tigers has provided fans with a lifetime of memories.

Who could forget the classic 1983 match up "between the hedges" with the Southeastern Conference championship on the line? Auburn and Georgia rolled into the game ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in the country respectively. The Tigers' defense proved too strong that day and Auburn claimed its first SEC title since 1957 with a 13-7 victory.

The Bulldogs had their share of memorable wins as well. In 1986 an unranked Georgia squad upset the eighth-ranked Tigers 20-16 in Jordan-Hare Stadium. After the game Bulldog fans stormed onto the field in celebration and were immediately doused by stadium fire hoses.

During the 1980's former Auburn player Vince Dooley stood on the sidelines as the Bulldogs' head coach for all of the epic battles between the two schools.
"Auburn-Georgia is a very healthy rivalry and there is a comfort between the fans that adds to the excitement of the game," Dooley said. "The fans are very passionate about their schools and their teams and that makes it very special."

As if the actual games between the two teams did not provide enough excitement in the series, consider that neither team has a winning record against the other at home.

Since the series began Georgia has a record of 10-7-2 in games played in Auburn, while the Tigers have a record of 15-8 in Athens.

"The familiarity between the schools has something to do with the visiting team winning on the road," Dooley said. "Each team feels at home at the other's stadium because of the closeness of the people and the proximity of the two schools."

For former Auburn tailback, and Georgia native, Stacy Danley there is another explanation as to why each team played well on the road.

"There were a lot of players from Georgia that played for Auburn and vice versa," Danley said. "Nobody wanted to go back home and listen to the other guys bragging about how they beat us."

Fortunately for Danley, the Tigers won every game against the Bulldogs during his four years on the Plains from 1987-1990, en route to winning three SEC titles.

"That was my game (Georgia) and I talked a lot of noise after we beat them those years," Danley said.

But, Dooley recalled how the Bulldogs pulled out some big wins against Auburn as well.

"We won six SEC championships while I was at Georgia and we clinched five in Auburn and one in Athens (against Auburn)," Dooley said. "It was always such an important game because it's played so late in the year."

Although an SEC championship may not be on the line when the two teams take the field today, motivation will not be scarce for either team. Not only are the Bulldogs looking to avenge last year's 45-34 loss in Athens, their third straight to Auburn at home, but they are also trying to extend their streak at Jordan-Hare. Georgia has not lost in Auburn since 1990.

The Bulldogs won 56-49 in 1996 in a four-overtime thriller, tied 23-23 in 1994 and won 14-10 in 1992 with a goal line stand during the final seconds of the game.

"Both teams winning on the road is an amazing phenomenon that can't be explained, as many times as it's happened, it just can't be explained," Dooley said.

And for all the joy and heartbreak the unexplainable has brought to Auburn and Georgia fans through the years, they wouldn't want it any other way. Would you?
