auburn Tiger center Karl Lavine has come a long way over the past year, and somehow he's managed to stay focused on the things that matter most. The time he spent recovering from a shoulder injury last year was put to good use. During the year of rehabilitation, Lavine received his degree in Public Administration, got engaged and began planning for his future.

Before he embarks on the journey he's been busy planning, Lavine has an obligation to fulfill. He's come back to practice, he's come back to his team and coaches, and he's come back to play football.

Growing up in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Lavine was the youngest of seven children. When Lavine was in fifth grade, one of his brothers talked his mother into letting him play.

In high school, he played on the defensive line until his senior year when he switched sides to play fullback. Recruiting offers came in from Notre Dame, Kentucky, Wake Forest and LSU to name a few, but Lavine wasn't that interested.

"Auburn was close to home. When I came for my visit I really liked the people and the atmosphere, but the fact that it was close to home was one of the main reasons I decided to come. I guess I am kind of a homebody," Lavine explained.

Lavine began his Auburn career in 1995 as a defensive lineman. After being named most improved defensive lineman in spring drills, Lavine moved from nose tackle to the offensive line two games into the season where he saw action as a blocking back in a short yardage set that scored 13 touchdowns in 13 situations.

After serving as the backup for starting center James Kiger in 1996, it looked like 1997 was going to be Lavine's year to shine.

At spring practice, Lavine was again named most improved lineman, only this time it was on offense, and went into the fall as the starting center.

Unfortunately, Lavine suffered a shoulder injury at the beginning of two-a-days that would require surgery, extensive rehabilitation and the loss of a whole season of football.

"It's definitely tough having a year off like that. I just concentrated on rehabilitation because my injury was so rare. I dislocated my shoulder posteriorly, in the back, so I knew I had to work extra hard to get it back into football shape," Lavine said.

The 1998 season began with Lavine listed on the depth chart as a reserve at center and there was talk of moving the fifth-year senior to tight end to give him more playing time during his final season on the Plains.

Through a series of events, however, the guy, who came back to be part of the team and contribute in any way he could, has had the opportunity to contribute at the position he was told he would play eventually way back in 1995.

"I've just been happy to be where I can help the team doing whatever they need me to do. Center is where I was needed. That's where it just happened to be. Wherever they need me that's where I'll be," Lavine said.

Lavine has accomplished what he set out to do. He's helped his team by being there when they needed him most, and like Auburn offensive line coach Rick Trickett believes, he's helped himself as well.

"I think coming back and playing this year is going to mean a little more to Karl in the long run. He wanted to go out on a good note. He wants to do things in life for self-gratification and self-satisfaction. I think you've got to respect that."
