Larry Edmondson knows the Southeastern Conference. Over the past decade, Auburn's wide receiver coach has spent time at LSU, Mississippi State and Auburn. Even before coming into the SEC, Edmondson knew quite a bit about the league. In the late 1980s, he and Auburn offensive coordinator Rodney Allison were part of the Southern Mississippi coaching staff that led the Golden Eagles to upset wins over both Auburn and Alabama.

After coaching for and against teams in the SEC, Edmondson has come to understand the competitive nature of the conference and that is one of the things he enjoys most about his job.

Born in Snyder, Texas, Edmondson's interest in football developed at an early age after he began playing when he was eight years old. After high school, Edmondson attended Texas A&M where he played tight end and was a member of the 1981 Independence Bowl team. The thought of coaching never really occurred to him until his junior year at A&M.

"When I first went to college, I was in business," Edmondson explained. "A couple of years into it, I had a coach who I thought was kind of a special guy because of some of the things he did for me. I thought about how much he'd meant to me and realized that maybe I could go into coaching. The more I was around it and the older I got, the more I liked it, so I switched majors."

With the encouragement of former A&M and current Mississippi State coach Jackie Sherill, Edmondson stayed on with the Aggies after graduation and served as a graduate assistant for three seasons. At the close of his last season there, Texas A&M defeated Auburn 36-16 in the 1986 Cotton Bowl. After coaching against the Tigers under Sherill, who graduated from Alabama, Edmondson learned about the Auburn-Alabama rivalry, although he didn't fully understand it until coming to Auburn.

"I always thought I understood because Texas-Texas A&M is so big, but it's nothing like Auburn-Alabama," Edmondson said. "I'd been told that for a long time, but I never really believed it until I got here.

"To me a rivalry is something that keeps it's luster by remaining competitive, where one team doesn't win year after year. That's kind of what's happened with the Texas-Texas A&M game, but hopefully in the next few years it will change. Even if it does, though, I don't think it could ever get as intense as the Auburn-Alabama rivalry, because these are the two big schools in the state."

As the Auburn-Alabama rivalry developed into one of the most competitive matchups in the country, the SEC improved and other conference rivalries formed. Whether it's Tennessee-Florida, Tennessee-Alabama or Auburn-LSU, the Southeastern Conference showdowns are what Edmondson likes best.

"The SEC is different than the other conferences I've coached in because from top to bottom all the teams are so good. You never have any weeks where you can relax, take it easy and still win. Instead of having one big rival, you have three. That's what makes you work hard and hopefully helps you win."
