Seventeen years ago on Sept. 26, 1981, an Auburn offense comprised of mostly freshmen and sophomores stood helplessly on the Neyland Stadium turf and watched as time ran out and ended any hopes of victory.

Trailing 10-7 with just 5:15 left in the game, the Tigers had driven from their 20-yard line to the Tennessee three in front of 92,612 screaming Vols fans. Auburn quarterback Ken Hobby fumbled and recovered the ball, but was unable to stop the clock for just one more play, and the Tigers suffered one of the most heart-wrenching losses in the team's 106 year history.

Although Auburn and Tennessee no longer play annually, their battles on the gridiron have been filled with miracle comebacks and monumental upsets. From 1956-1991, Auburn and Tennessee played every year, and throughout the 1980's the winner usually won the SEC championship. The Tigers won SEC titles in 1983, '87-'89, while the Vols won titles in 1985 and 1989.

Since 1981 Auburn outside linebackers coach Joe Whitt has been on the sidelines for every game against the Vols and has witnessed all the highs and lows of the series.

"It was always a big game when we played Tennessee. We were a little out manned in 1981, but our kids played hard and we had a chance to win and that's all you can do. It's always a fight with Tennessee," Whitt said.

In 1982, Auburn ended a three game losing streak to the Vols with a 24-14 victory. Auburn legends Lionel James and Bo Jackson provided the biggest thrill of the day when James completed a 43-yard halfback pass to Jackson in the third quarter. "Bo over the top" capped that drive and sealed the victory for the Tigers.

The following year Auburn whipped the Vols 37-14 in Knoxville. The Tiger's Trey Gainous returned a punt for a touchdown and Randy Campbell hit 10 of 16 pass attempts for 118 yards.

"I remember we had not thrown the ball very well in the first two games and we really wanted to get the passing game going to free up Bo and Lionel," Campbell said. "Tennessee is always loud and that was one of the biggest crowds we had ever seen, but when Trey (Gainous) broke that punt return they all got real quiet."

In 1985, the Vols shocked No. 1 Auburn by running up 479 yards of total offense en route to a 38-20 upset win. Tennessee quarterback Tony Robinson passed for 259 yards and four touchdowns on the Auburn defense in leading the unranked Vols to victory.

The following year, however, Tennessee hit a brick wall in the form of the Auburn defense. The Tigers crushed the Vols 34-8, while Auburn defensive back Carlo Cheattom crushed the Vols' Reggie Cobb and knocked him unconscious.

"We had a great defense that year with Tracy Rocker and Aundray Bruce," Whitt said, "Tennessee had a tough time against us that day, and so did Cobb."
Time again ran out on the Tigers in 1987 as the teams battled to a 20-20 tie.

The Vols rallied from a 20-10 deficit in the fourth quarter and tied the game with 1:20 remaining. Auburn quarterback Jeff Burger moved the Tigers to the Tennessee 33 yard line, but was unable to stop the clock for a potential game-winning field goal attempt.

The Tigers pulled a come-from-behind miracle of its own in 1990, the last time Tennessee played at Jordan-Hare. Led by freshman quarterback Stan White, the Tigers overcame a 17 point fourth-quarter deficit and tied the Vols 26-26.

Will today's match up be another last-second thriller, filled with heart-stopping plays? If history is any indication, hang on to the edge of your seats and enjoy the show.
