<P>When Tommy Tuberville finished assembling his staff at Auburn, Tiger fans were left looking at eight new faces and only one familiar face. That familiar face is Joe Whitt. Whitt is the only assistant coach remaining from any previous Auburn staff.
<P>Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Whitt attended Alabama State University in 1969. While at ASU he played defensive end three years for the Hornets (1969-71), and graduated one year later in 1972.
<P>Whitt began his coaching career in 1974 as an assistant coach at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama. He stayed with the Generals seven years before leaving in 1981 to join Pat Dye, at Auburn, to be the Tigers assistant head coach and outside linebackers coach.
<P>During his illustrious 18 year career with the Tigers, Whitt has helped Auburn win four SEC Titles, go to twelve bowl games, and three times helped the Auburn defense lead the SEC against the rush. Whitt has also played a crucial role in many players lives. He coached thirteen players who were drafted into the NFL, including Aundray Bruce, the No. 1 pick in the 1988 draft and also
coached five All-SEC selections and a pair of All Americans.
<P>Tommy Tuberville will be the third coach Whitt has coached under at Auburn, the previous two being Pat Dye (1980-1992), and Terry Bowden (1993-98). On this staff he will be coaching linebackers.
<P>Whitt is married to the former Ethelrine Pollard. They have one daughter, Nakesha Dionne, and one son, Joseph Barrington.
