IANAL... I don't think being handed the fruits of someones cracking attempts in a zip file isn't illegal, but going and posting it up is getting close. He says that he knew the goods were illegally obtained, and he kept hold of them; that makes him culpable. The proper thing to do would be to cease communications with the crackers and call a lawyer. (Side Note: As a sysadmin, I believe anyone who would collaborate with system crackers is lower than pond scum.)<p>Second, the exploits described are kinda funky... In order to do IP sniffing on GM's network, the cracker would need to have a binary installed on a machine on said network. To get a binary in place they would need an account (legit or otherwise). To say that the sniffer was their first point of entry... Stretches the imagination. Then comes this stuff about patching the mail services to copy root's mail. Well, GM's probably on a webhosting box so root's mail would consist of cron-job errors and such. Root doesn't get everyone's email. And why patch POP and SMTP? One or the other should have done the job (if I were to try something similar, I'd pick POP for various technical reasons, not the least of which being that it'd be simpler to pull off).<p>Finally, the emails themselves... Does this banter remind anyone of a comic book villain? I mean... "Do not disappoint me." as a parting shot, "I will not be made a fool of by..." Come on.<br>
