H.R. 514 (The Wireless Privacy Enhancement Act of 1999 ) has passed
the House and is on its way to the Senate. This is a bill that will
restrict the monitoring of personal communications such as pagers and
cellular telephone conversations by limiting the manufacture of
scanners that are capable or easily modifiable to receive such
transmissions. Depending on interpretation this bill could also mean
the end to the monitoring of Police , Fire, Ambulance and other 'Public
Safety' frequencies. It will make it illegal to receive or intercept
pocsag, flex, mdt, etc.. frequencies. This 'crime' will be punishable
by up to six months in jail and up to a $2,000 fine. Again we urge you
to make you opinion known to your elected official.

An Australian ISP has admitted to breaking and entering into one of its
subscribers machines. The user had unknowingly installed a web server
on his machine in violation of the Terms of Service with his ISP. The
ISP instead of asking that it be removed or turning off the customers
access decided to break into the customers box and turn off the service
for him. Then instead of keeping quiet about they write a nice letter
to the user telling him that he, the user, was in violation of local
and federal laws by running such a service.
