Computer Technology, or c't, a German Magazine claims that by exploiting
the Pentium III's deep sleep feature it is possible to reset the
Pentium III's serial number without rebooting the system. Intel has
claimed that the system must be rebooted before the number would change.
The serial number in the Pentium III can now be secretly turned on and
off without the user's knowledge by a small software program. This
program could be imbeded into a web page or sent as an email attachment
for example.

It looks like the mainstream press is finnally picking up on a story
that we reported on last week. There is a major security flaw with
WindowsNT that allows any local user have administrative privileges.
There is even a script available so that all you have to do is point and
click. The authors of the sploit, L0pht Heavy Industries, have also
released a patch. Microsoft has released a Security Bulletin and some
companies are now checking for this whole in their security scanning
products.
