H.R. 514 (The Wireless Privacy Enhancement Act of 1999 ) is scheduled
to be voted on by the House today and from their will move to the
Senate. This is a bill that will restrict the monitoring of personal
communications such as pagers and cellular telephone conversations by
limiting the manufacture of scanners that are capable or easily
modifiable to receive such transmissions. Depending on interpretation
this bill could also mean the end to the monitoring of Police , Fire,
Ambulance and other 'Public Safety' frequencies. It will make it
illegal to receive or intercept pocsag, flex, mdt, etc.. frequencies.
This 'crime' will be punishable by up to six months in jail and up to a
$2,000 fine. Again we urge you to make you opinion known to your elected
official. It is NOT to late!

A high School student has found a security hole in the Cobalt RaQ
server. The Cobalt RaQ is a cool rack mountable blue box that is sold to
ISPs as an easy to setup and maintain web server. The preinstalled
Linux and server software is ready to go out of the box. The security
hole is due to the standard Linux history file being accessible from the
web browser as a default.
This history file records all activity on a system like mistyped
passwords. By searching for the default web page on the sever with a
search engine such as AltaVista it is easy to find vulnerable sites

A controversial report, known as the Walsh Report, that was written two
years ago but only recently uncovered may soon disappear again.
Australian government publisher AusInfo has sent letters to all original
recipients of the report asking for its return. This report advocated
the use of PC bugging, software booby-traps and legalized cracking by
law enforcement. AusInfo has said that the recall was due to an
administrative error and that the report was still under embargo by the
federal attorney general.
