Kevin Mitnick escaped from the Metropolitan Detention Center early this
morning. It seems that he was severely distraught over the decision of
the
government to further sandbag his case by denying him the ability to
review the evidence against him in preparation for his upcoming state
trial. Reports this morning are sketchy but it would appear that while
Kevin was making a phone call he dialed into a modem connected to the MDC
computer system, whistled a 2400 baud carrier and proceeded to disable
the entire lock down system and then just walked out. A spokesman for the
jail said "We knew he was dangerous, we never should have let him out of
solitary." The FBI has begun a nationwide manhunt.

Microsoft announced today that it has purchased Network Solutions the
global registrar for the top-level domains of .com, .net, .org and .edu.
This new acquisition essentially gives Microsoft complete control over
the
internet. Microsoft spokes people say that this was inevitable, "We
already have complete control over Operating Systems, Office
Applications, and Internet Browsers, top level domains where a logical
next step.

Network Associates has announced that it has reached an agreement with
L0pht Heavy Industries to purchase their award winning software
L0phtCrack. L0phtCrack is the premier password auditing tool for
WindowsNT and recently received a Golden Guardian award from
InfoWorld. NAI says that it will be incorporating L0phtCrack into an
upcoming release of its Net Tools Product Suite. When asked about the
deal Mudge, a member of the L0pht said "Everyone was accusing us of
selling out, well, now we have." The deal is reported to be worth $1.2
billion dollars.

CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) has announced that it will close
its doors at the end of the month of April and has begun to sell off its
assets. "We just can't keep up with the new exploits," a spokesperson
said, "we were two and three months late in issuing our advisories, it
was no longer feasible for us to stay in business." When asked how the
recent 'Melissa' virus advisory was released so quickly he replied, "Oh,
we had help from NIPC (National Infrastructure Protection Center) on that
one"

At approximately ten minutes after midnight Eastern time on April 1, 1999
The Hacker News Network was Cracked. We are unsure how our security was
breached but suspect a vulnerability in sshd. The password on our server
had been changed and because the machine is in a remote location where
unable to regain control until noon. The individual calling herself Megan
A Haquer left a very unique page which we have saved in the HNN Cracked
Pages Archive.
