Edward Borden, the Lawyer for David L. Smith, the New Jersey man charged
with creating the Melissa virus, is claiming that prosecutors have applied
the incorrect law to his client. Borden, whose client is charged with
interrupting public communication, theft of computer services and wrongful
access to computer systems, claims that these charges do not apply in this
case.

Now if you utilize a misconfigued CGI it is a crime. At least that is what
officials in East Lansing are claiming. The city recently set up a web
site for people to offer tips to police about the March 27-28 riot at
Michigan State University. Earlier news reports claimed that a
misconfigued CGI allowed visitors to view the identities of the
'anonymous' posters. The information on how to exploit the CGI was then
emailed to students @msu.edu. Now city officials have called in the FBI.
Maybe the first person they should arrest is whoever setup the web server.

MAO Enterprises announced today that it has discovered a security flaw in
Rocketmail's (www.rocketmail.com) free web email services. If you should
happen to know the logon name of an account at Rocketmail which has been
inactive for a while, it is possible to reactivate the account with no
proof that you were the original account holder. This allows someone to
pass themselves off as the original account holder making it extremely
easy to retrieve personal data, address books, and other info which were
stored by the last user.
