Yesterday morning a "technical error" caused the email addresses of 24,000
visitors of Nissan's web site to be mailed to everyone on the list. The
people had provided their email addresses so as to receive more
information about the Xterra, a new Nissan sport utility vehicle. Instead
they received an email list with 24,000 names on it. Talk about a
spammers dream list.

Equifax Inc., the credit rating giant has said that it will soon start
selling credit information over the web making it easy for merchants to
verify the credit of potential customers instantly. Equifax says that this
new convience will hopefully help cut down on credit fraud. (Ed Note: It
will also make it much easier for employers, landlords, potential
girlfriends, etc to look up your credit history.)

Using "not very sophisticated hacker tools'' downloaded from the Internet,
(probably Back Orifice, and L0phtCrack) Philip Loranger, chief of the
Command and Control Protect Division in the Army's Information Assurance
Office broke into a dialup .mil site and demonstrated just how easy it was
to turn on microphones and cameras. His intent was to show that not only
is the information stored on a system vulnerable but the entire room that
a PC is in is at risk.

There is a new book out called "Top Secret Intranet" and talks about the
"Intelink"
intranet used by the US Intelligence Community. Seems pretty hip;
written by an ex-NSA guy (infact the first book the NSA has actually
allowed an ex-employee to write). It even comes with a CD with demo
software & unclassified data, so you can perform fake searches and get the
feel for the system. Not sure if this book is directed at the spook
community, or
the IT community, but they talk about how the network was setup, what
worked, what didn't, why, etc.. How to deal with contractors, problems
with extending the network to other agencies, etc. Pretty good read and
worth checking out.
