after running automake, aclocal and autoconf manually, the error is for ./bootstrap.sh is

Please, make bootstrap.sh more robust from clean build and/ow provide workaround.

Pander, i suspect you have a mixing of version for autoconf, automake and libtoolize.
Can you please run and print the output and also the versions:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install autoconf

make and sudo make install worked, but running guvcview resulted in:

guvcview: error while loading shared libraries: libgviewv4l2core-2.0.so.2: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

How do I fix that?

PS For USB camera, no /dev/video0 is created when I plug one in (to test with .eg. gstreamer). Is it correct that that device does not appear automaticilly or can I fix that too?

Pander, did you read the build instructions? No, you did not. Why don't you follow the build instructions?

Run in the command line (*):

sudo /sbin/modprobe -r -f vfe_v4l2
sleep 1
sudo /sbin/modprobe -r -f s5k4ec

Now load the new driver:

sudo /sbin/modprobe s5k4ec
sudo /sbin/modprobe vfe_v4l2

Now you should have /dev/video0:

ls /dev/video0

Or edit /etc/modules and add the two lines and reboot:

s5k4ec
vfe_v4l2

(*) If you are in Ubuntu this should work also:
sudo modprobe -r -f vfe_v4l2
sleep 1
sudo modprobe -r -f s5k4ec

sudo modprobe s5k4ec
sudo modprobe vfe_v4l2

Please, note the guvcview has been updated recently, do a git clone againa to make sure you have the latest fix.

Thanks. Was already on up to date clone. Am on Ubuntu. Loading modules work, however no /dev/video0 is appearing. How to debug this further?

You need to activate the sensor. Use the updated DTB with the sensor enabled from here: https://github.com/avafinger/pine64_camera

PS I see libmp3lame-dev and libx264-dev should also be installed according to docs there. Rebuild guvcview with that?

No need to rebuild, but you are in a safe side just installing them.

YES, it works. Thanks! Resolution goes all the way up to 1920 x 1080. Higher than than the application runs into troubles and reports errors.

Latency is still high, but I could replicate the build and install completely. Hope this and other special build debs end up in longsleep's PPA for ease of installation. (I have many devices so don't want to build that manually on all of them and other less technical users can start testing all this.)
