complete customization setup

This package is only partially customizable right now: some variables
are only defined with defvar and there is no customization group.

This solves both issues and cleans up the code slightly.

Hi. Thanks for these PRs. I'm on vacation now. I haven't used this package in almost 8 years now, so I think it's best if you just fork this and work in your own fork. I'm not qualified or interested in reviewing this. If you want to send a PR to update the README so it points to your fork (because mine is probably easier to find on Google) I'd be happy to merge that.
