Fix Performance Test Inconsistencies

Address flaky and unreliable performance test results that are causing CI/CD pipeline instability and making it difficult to detect real performance regressions.

Summary of changes

  • Performance tests are showing inconsistent results with high variance in execution times
  • Test environment setup lacks proper resource isolation and baseline establishment
  • Missing standardized performance test framework with proper warm-up and measurement phases
  • Need to implement statistical analysis for reliable performance regression detection
  • Establish consistent test data and environment configuration across all performance tests

Execution Steps

Step 1: Analysis and Documentation

Conduct thorough analysis of current performance test issues and document findings for remediation planning.

1.1: Audit Current Performance Test Suite

Analyze existing performance tests to identify sources of inconsistency and document current state.

  • Review all performance test files in tests/performance/ directory and subdirectories
  • Document test execution patterns, timing mechanisms, and measurement approaches used
  • Identify tests with highest variance by analyzing recent CI/CD build logs and test reports
  • Create docs/performance-test-audit.md with findings including test names, variance levels, and suspected causes
  • Document current test infrastructure setup including hardware specs, OS versions, and resource allocation

1.2: Identify Root Causes of Inconsistencies

Investigate and document the primary factors causing performance test instability.

  • Analyze system resource usage during test execution (CPU, memory, disk I/O, network)
  • Review test environment configuration for potential sources of variance (background processes, shared resources)
  • Document timing-related issues such as insufficient warm-up periods and measurement granularity
  • Identify external dependencies that may affect test performance (databases, network services, file systems)
  • Create docs/performance-issues-analysis.md with root cause analysis and impact assessment

1.3: Design Performance Test Framework

Create comprehensive design document for standardized performance testing framework.

  • Design test execution phases: environment setup, warm-up, measurement, and cleanup
  • Define statistical analysis approach for detecting significant performance changes
  • Specify test data management strategy for consistent baseline measurements
  • Design resource isolation mechanisms to minimize external interference
  • Create docs/performance-test-framework-design.md with detailed technical specifications and implementation plan

Step 2: Test Environment Stabilization

Implement foundational changes to create a stable and consistent test execution environment.

2.1: Implement Test Environment Isolation

Create isolated test environment configuration to minimize external factors affecting performance measurements.

  • Modify scripts/setup-performance-env.sh to disable unnecessary system services during test execution
  • Update docker/performance-test.dockerfile to use dedicated container configuration with fixed resource limits
  • Add CPU affinity and memory allocation controls in config/performance-test-config.yaml
  • Implement test environment validation checks in tests/performance/utils/env_validator.py
  • Update CI/CD pipeline configuration in .github/workflows/performance-tests.yml to use dedicated runners

2.2: Standardize Test Data Management

Implement consistent test data setup and management across all performance tests.

  • Create tests/performance/fixtures/data_generator.py for reproducible test data generation
  • Implement database seeding utilities in tests/performance/utils/db_seeder.py with fixed datasets
  • Add test data cleanup mechanisms in tests/performance/utils/cleanup.py
  • Update existing performance tests to use standardized data fixtures instead of random data
  • Create tests/performance/fixtures/baseline_data.sql with consistent test datasets

Step 3: Performance Test Framework Implementation

Build and integrate the standardized performance testing framework with proper measurement and analysis capabilities.

3.1: Create Core Performance Testing Framework

Implement the foundational framework classes and utilities for consistent performance measurement.

  • Create tests/performance/framework/base_performance_test.py with standardized test execution phases
  • Implement tests/performance/framework/metrics_collector.py for consistent performance data collection
  • Add tests/performance/framework/statistical_analyzer.py for variance analysis and regression detection
  • Create tests/performance/framework/test_runner.py with warm-up and measurement cycle management
  • Implement tests/performance/framework/report_generator.py for standardized performance reporting

3.2: Integrate Statistical Analysis

Add robust statistical analysis capabilities to detect real performance regressions while filtering out noise.

  • Implement statistical significance testing in tests/performance/framework/significance_tester.py
  • Add baseline performance data storage in tests/performance/data/baselines.json
  • Create performance trend analysis in tests/performance/framework/trend_analyzer.py
  • Implement confidence interval calculations for performance measurements
  • Add performance regression detection alerts in tests/performance/framework/regression_detector.py

3.3: Update Existing Performance Tests

Migrate existing performance tests to use the new standardized framework.

  • Refactor tests/performance/api_performance_test.py to inherit from base performance test class
  • Update tests/performance/database_performance_test.py to use new metrics collection and analysis
  • Modify tests/performance/ui_performance_test.py to implement proper warm-up and measurement phases
  • Convert tests/performance/load_test.py to use statistical analysis for result validation
  • Update all performance test assertions to use statistical significance instead of fixed thresholds

Step 4: CI/CD Integration and Monitoring

Integrate the improved performance testing framework into the CI/CD pipeline with proper monitoring and alerting.

4.1: Update CI/CD Pipeline Configuration

Modify the continuous integration pipeline to use the new performance testing framework with proper result analysis.

  • Update .github/workflows/performance-tests.yml to use new test runner and reporting mechanisms
  • Add performance baseline comparison step in CI/CD pipeline with statistical analysis
  • Implement performance test result archiving in scripts/archive-performance-results.sh
  • Add performance regression detection with appropriate failure thresholds
  • Configure performance test artifacts upload including detailed reports and metrics

4.2: Implement Performance Monitoring Dashboard

Create monitoring and alerting system for tracking performance test results and trends over time.

  • Create scripts/generate-performance-dashboard.py for performance metrics visualization
  • Implement config/performance-alerts.yaml with configurable alerting thresholds
  • Add performance trend tracking in tests/performance/monitoring/trend_tracker.py
  • Create docs/performance-monitoring-guide.md with dashboard usage and interpretation guidelines
  • Set up automated performance report generation and distribution

Manual testing plan

  • Execute the complete performance test suite multiple times to verify consistency of results
  • Run performance tests in different environment conditions to validate isolation effectiveness
  • Verify that statistical analysis correctly identifies real performance regressions while ignoring noise
  • Test the CI/CD pipeline integration by triggering builds and reviewing performance test reports
  • Validate that performance baselines are properly established and maintained across test runs
  • Confirm that performance monitoring dashboard accurately reflects test results and trends
  • Test alerting mechanisms by introducing intentional performance regressions
